Volleyball thriller among action Tuesday night

Punxsy's volleyball squad was one of seven sports in action on Tuesday for PAHS.

The Lady Chucks won a thriller over the Lady Beavers of DuBois.

John Francis Orsich, 47

John Francis Orsich, 47, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014 at his home.

John was born Aug. 8, 1967, in Punxsutawney, a son of Alice (Kaza) Orsich of Punxsutawney, who survives, and the late Frank Orsich.

He was a member of Ss. Cosmas & Damian Church in Punxsutawney.

John was employed by Goodwill Industries in the Punxsy retail store.

Look who joined in on the Ice Bucket Challenge!

The Ice Bucket Challenge trend has been sweeping the nation to raise awareness for Lou Gehrig's Disease.

The faculty at Jenks Hill Elementary took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on Friday afternoon. The faculty was challenged by PAHS Principal Dave London. They are challenging all the elementary school principals and the athletic committee staff. Participants included Deidre Martino, Kelly Fisher, Holly McCausland, Roberta Fetterman, Andrea Caylor, Judy Fetterman, Julie Baun, Cody Wells, Chris Fallat, Deana Myers, Shannon White, and Stefanie Neal.

VIDEO: NCAA Lifts Penn State's Postseason Ban (Yahoo Sports)

The NCAA has lifted the on-the-field sanctions placed on the Penn State football team for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, including immediately eliminating the postseason ban and restoring scholarships. Penn State was halfway through a four-year postseason ban handed down during the summer of 2012. The NCAA rescinded some of the scholarship sanctions last year. In a news release Monday, the NCAA says that in addition to the postseason ban being lifted, Penn State will be allowed to have the full complement of football scholarships in 2015.

Theresa V. Garzoni, 91

September 7, 2014

Theresa V. Garzoni, 91, formerly of 119 Garzoni Road, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at Christ the King Manor, DuBois.

She was born May 29, 1923, in Anita, a daughter of the late Theodore and
Angelina (Pellegrino) Maruca.

On Nov. 22, 1947, she married Richard A. Garzoni, who preceded her in death on Sept. 29, 2012.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anita, Pa.

She was formerly employed by Maruca’s Grocery Store, the Jefferson County Courthouse and Rola Jensen.

Punxsutawney Phil received seven more years of life thanks to the magic elixir that he drank at Saturday's Philfest at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney.

The store building of C.E. Smith, on the Maysville road, in Perry township, was destroyed by fire last night, together with all its contents, including about nine hundred dollars worth of stock and about $350 in money, $335 of which was in bills.
