John M. Pearce Jr., 76

September 1, 2014

John M. Pearce, Jr., 76, of Covode, died Monday, Sept. 1, 2014, at home.

He was born Oct. 22, 1937, in Winslow, a son of the late John Miles Pearce, Sr. and Vera Jane (Pierce) Pearce.

On May 9, 1959, he married the former Barbara R. Shields. She survives and resides in Covode.

John was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers for more than 30 years.

He was the owner and a driver of coal trucks for Pearce Trucking and had also worked in construction.

Traditional meeting of the ‘Corn Cob Club’ continues

The Corn Cob Club held its annual retreat, this year at a new location at Bill Deeley's farm.

In recent years, the annual event was held at the farm of Judge Edwin Snyder, who passed away last year.

Thursday was a busy one on the links, as Punxsy's boys' and girls' golf teams were both in action, and the 9th-grade football team also opened its season. For recaps from those events, see Friday's edition of The Spirit.

Today's sports schedule includes:

• Boys' Soccer at Indiana Tournament, 1:30 p.m.

• Varsity Football season opener at Moniteau, 7 p.m.

BIG RUN — Joe Buterbaugh is a familiar face. He is best known as the mayor of Big Run, a position he has held for 32 years. Or perhaps you have seen him throughout the community, where he is known to many as “The Candyman.”

Todd "Ghost in the Head" Johnson brings Punxsutawney's native past back to life

Punxsutawney — Tuesday evening was an illuminative one at the Lattimer House of the Punxsutawney Area Historical & Genealogical Society.

The event was called "Native American Lifeways," and the speaker was Todd "Ghost in the Head" Johnson.

His presentation was very intriguing, because it covered Native American life here in Punxsy and other places in the Eastern Woodlands area.

Dennis Andrew Smith, 49

Dennis Andrew Smith, 49, of Hamilton, died on Aug. 27, 2014, at his home.

He was born on Nov. 1, 1964, the son of Myrna Burkett Smith and Bruce Smith.

Dennis’ family includes three brothers, Doug Smith of Hamilton, Brad (Amber) Smith of Punxsutawney, and Greg (Natalie) Smith of Brownstown; five nephews; three nieces; one great-niece; and three great-nephews.
He worked with gas wells and logging.

A private memorial service will be held at the family's convenience.

It was back to “teachers’ dirty looks” — though the teachers in our district don’t have any dirty looks! — on Tuesday, as most area students returned to class following summer vacation.
