Punxsy Rotary Club hosts banquet, welcomes incoming members, honors Rotarians of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Rotary Club announced its Rotarians of the Year at its annual banquet, which was held at the Punxsutawney Country Club on Tuesday, and this year, there were two recipients.

Erin Cameron, incoming president, said that the choice is never simple, as there are so many hard-working, enthusiastic, dedicated individuals.

Doug Chambers and Tom Chelgren were both chosen as this year's Rotarians of the Year.

Dave London, emcee, welcomed the new Rotary members, Tammy and Tim Carulli, Chris Neal, Sue Wolfe and Laurie Klingensmith.

Jeff Tech JOC furloughs remaining PN instructors

The three instructors in the Practical Nursing (PN) program spoke to the Jeff Tech Operating Committee (JOC) about the promotion of the program in the last month.

However, the JOC committee voted Monday to eliminate the three instructor positions.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, wait! It’s a bear!

David Beatty of Punxsutawney submitted this photos of a black bear he and his family observed in the distance in the field near Gobbler’s Knob around 8 p.m. on Monday night.

While black bears are great to observe from a distance, with the sightings of them becoming more frequent, the Pennsylvania Game Commission reminds residents to keep their distance.

Mark A. Ferko Jr., 27

Mark A. Ferko Jr., 27, of Falls Creek, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, in Reynoldsville.

He was born July 2, 1986, in DuBois, the son of Mark A. Ferko of Sykesville and Kathy Y. Fincham of Youngstown, Ohio.

Mark is survived by a half brother, Michael Fincham of New Bern, North Carolina; a half sister, Jennifer Houston of Youngstown, Ohio; two nephews, Kyle and Connor Houston; his paternal grandparents, Michael and Louise Ferko of Falls Creek; and special friend Danielle Ritchie and children Lola and Kem of Reynoldsville.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents.

Ricky L. Kuntz Jr., 38

Ricky L. Kuntz, Jr. 38, of Butler, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at the Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Butler on Feb. 3, 1976, a son of Ricky L. Kuntz Sr. and Mary Ann Hinchberger Fitzpatrick.

Ricky was a loving and compassionate husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing, helping people and spending time with his daughters.

He was employed as a driver for Vogel Disposal Company. He had obtained a CDL and drove throughout the country, until recently moving back to Butler to be closer to his children.

Robert M. Sink, 72

June 24, 2014

Robert M. Sink, 72, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, formerly of Punxsutawney and Clymer, passed away June 6, 2014, at his home.

The son of Edward Sink and Katherin Milliron Sink, Bob was born Dec. 5 1941, in Punxsutawney.

He was a graduate of the Clymer High School and a proud veteran of the United States Navy.

Bob also retired from Unysis Corporation as a project manager.

Brookville library holds annual author luncheon with Julia Child biographer

BROOKVILLE — The Rebecca M. Arthurs Memorial Library in Brookville returned with its annual author luncheon last Wednesday, held at the Pinecrest Country Club.

This year's book was the biography "Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child," and the author, Bob Spitz, was the speaker for the luncheon.

Falls Creek man, 27, dies in wreck

June 23, 2014

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — A 27-year-old Falls Creek man died following a crash that occurred at 10:23 p.m. Sunday along Reynoldsville Falls Creek Road in Winslow Township, according to DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Mark A. Ferko was ejected through the front driver's side window of the 2004 Dodge Neon he was driving, police reported.

Ferko had been traveling northbound on the road and was negotiating a slight left curve when, for unknown reasons, his car began rotating clockwise and crossed the white fog line and northbound shoulder.

Miners fall to grays, but take the win for Lisa’s Ladybugs

Members of the Rossiter Miners — decked out in their pink uniforms — posed for a photo at this weekend’s Cancer Awareness Tournament in Rossiter, at which Federation League teams came together to help raise money for a good cause. Pictured with the team are representatives of Lisa’s Ladybug Patient Care Fund, an organization that assists those who are undergoing cancer treatments (front, from left) Connie Shick, Lori Gardner, Lesa Walker, Brandi Walker and Lori Ebel. Proceeds from the tournament went to Lisa’s Ladybugs.

Laura M. “Lolly” Carr, 70

June 22, 2014

Laura M. “Lolly” Carr, 70, Ridgway, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

She was born April 25, 1944, in Brookville, a daughter of the late Thornton B. and Bernice L. (Fitzgerald) McNeil.

On Sept. 26, 1963, she married Peter S. Carr, who survives.

She was an avid artist, cook and baker and enjoyed watching the Food Network. But most of all, she loved being a grandmother.

She was the local Red Cross representative for the Ridgway area and a former Worthy Advisor for the International Order of Rainbow for Girls.
