Boddorf, Burke and Johnson will help make up Penn State DuBois Cross Country Team

DuBOIS – A roster of five runners will make up the Penn State DuBois Men's and Women's Cross Country Team this year.
Runners are currently training for the fall season. Team members include Juliann Boddorf, Matthew Burke and Tamera Anthony, all from Punxsutawney; Micah Shaffer of DuBois, and Austin Hawkins of Philadelphia.
The team members bring a wide variety of athletic experiences and accomplishments to the table.

Bach’s presentation informs local residents, asks ‘Are You Getting What You Paid For?’

Wednesday afternoon, the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) welcomed a visit from Mary Bach, a consumer advocate who has gained national fame for her crusade for consumer rights.

The program "Are You Getting What You Paid For?" was held at the Jefferson Street Social Hall.

Old Home Week Parade set for 4 p.m Saturday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Now that summer is officially here, it's time for the annual Punxsutawney Fire Department Old Home Week Parade, scheduled for 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Punxsutawney.

Mahoning Street will be shut down at approximately 3:15 p.m., with the parade moving out at 4 p.m.

Margie E. Liptak, 88

Margie E. Liptak, 88, died Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Conemaugh Hospital in Johnstown after a lengthy illness.

Margie was born in Walston, Pa., (Jefferson County) on March 16, 1926, to Steve and Anna (Fairman) Farcus.

Upon graduating from Saints Cosmas and Damian High School in Punxsutawney, Margie worked in the grocery business, eventually
becoming manager of stores in Punxsutawney and St. Marys.

Later, she joined Pure Carbon in St. Marys, where she worked until retirement in 1991.

Margie married George L. Liptak in June 1957, and the couple resided in Byrnedale.

2014 Spring Sports Outstanding Athletes Named

You voted, and we tallied! The 2014 Outstanding Spring Sports Athletes are Alyssa Reitz and Dakota Thomas. Reitz won with a total of 329 votes, and finished her softball season with the Chucks holding a .364 batting average and boasting 16 hits, eight RBI and 11 runs scored. Dakota Thomas received an impressive 457 votes, and ended his high school baseball season with a .386 batting average, 17 hits, seven RBI and nine runs scored. Congratulations to both of these athletes on all their achievements, and a special thanks to everyone who submitted votes.

ANITA — Brenda Scarantine is a familiar face. You may recognize her as the treasurer for the American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 62 who recently helped her organization sell poppies. Or perhaps you have seen her throughout the community.

Volunteers make tax season less taxing, stressful

Community Action, Inc. and The Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging honored volunteers who served over 2,000 hours as Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) preparers in Clarion and Jefferson counties.

This tax season, 1,387 returns were successfully e-filed, bringing federal refunds and Earned Income Tax Credits totaling $1,050,213 into local communities.

The VITA Program offered free tax help to families earning $52,000 or less. All volunteers received free training and were certified by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

TOM SIPLE FOUNDATION RECEIVES $13,550 DONATION

The Tom Siple Foundation recently received a donation of $13,550 made possible through the hard work of members of the local community.

The money was donated in memory of Doug Horne Jr. and Fred Manners.

Family and friends of the two banded together to raise money for the foundation by soliciting donations of various items that were raffled off from early 2014 until now.

All of the proceeds benefited the Tom Siple Foundation.

Howard D. McKee, 89

June 25, 2014

Howard D. McKee, 89, of Rossiter, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at the DuBois Nursing Home.

Mr. McKee was born April 17, 1925, in Pennsylvania, a son of the late Morgan and Maude (Lockard) McKee.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Emily I. (Waring) McKee.

Howard enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman.

He was self-employed as a core driller for his company, McKee Drilling.

He was a member of the Steffy Church and served on the board of trustees.
