Webelos earn Arrow of Light awards

Earlier this year, the Webelos 2 Den earned the Arrow of Light Award at Pack 245's Blue & Gold Banquet. Cubmaster Greg Kunselman presented each scout with his own individual Arrow of Light Award. Kunselman made each award for the scouts, and each arrow was hand painted to represent the years the scout had been in Cub Scouts. Alec Depp, Daniel Kunselman, Alex Meko and Robert Slaughenhaupt, Jr crossed over to continue their journey as Boy Scouts. The scoutmasters were there to welcome them to the troop of their choice.

Connie Riddle among those honored for Career Women’s Week

“Hard work has always paid off.”

Each year, five women are chosen by the Punxsutawney Career Women’s Club for Career Women’s Week. The criteria used for choosing these women are based not only on their professional efforts, but also on the contributions they’ve made to community and family.

The club was founded in 1930, originally known as Punxsutawney Business & Professional Women’s Club. On Sept. 8, 1998, the club name was changed and incorporated as a non-profit organization under the name of

McDonald’s collecting for soldier care packages

The Punxsy McDonald’s is once again teaming up to Support the Troops by collecting a variety of items for care packages, which will be sent overseas to the troops.

Items such as non-perishable foods, snacks, canned food, first-aid kits and hygiene products are now being collected.

Others participating in the collection are Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Rainbow Express Preschool. Items will be collected until Saturday, May 17.

William E. Allemang Jr., 89

William E. Allemang Jr., 89, Bethel Park, entered eternal life on Friday, May 9, 2014, at the Kane Nursing Home in Scott Township.

He was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late William and Pauline (Sigel) Allemang Sr.

He was the beloved husband of the late Bernadette; loving father of Karen (Raymond) Kosmach of Ohio, William (Teresa) Allemang III of Punxsutawney and Brian (Janice) Allemang of Bethel Park; six grandchildren, Tonya Briggs, Brooke Wozniak, Mary Kundrat and Marc, John and Michelle Allemang.

He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

Rotary holds National Honor Society banquet

The 2014 Rotary National Honor Society Banquet was held Thursday evening at the Punxsutawney County Club.

Thirteen seniors and 22 juniors were honored at the banquet, which was also attended by Rotary Club members and members of the Punxsutawney Area School Board.

USPS looking to ‘stamp out hunger’

On Saturday, the local representatives of the United States Postal Service will aim to “Stamp Out Hunger” as part of the national annual drive to collect non-perishable food items left in mailboxes and post offices.

Locally, members of the National Association of Letter Carriers and of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association will be collecting food, and a hamper will be set up in the lobby of the Post Office in town, as well.

Cassidy was born and raised in Punxsutawney.

Two injured in car-on-truck wreck

A Suzuki Forenza collided with a Residual Waste truck at the intersection of Route 36 and the Cloe-Rossiter Road in the village of Cloe at 3:07 p.m. Thursday, demolishing the front end of the car and disabling the truck.

The 17-year-old driver of the Subaru and a passenger were entrapped and were extricated with the Jaws of Life tool.

They suffered moderate and minor injuries, respectively, and the truck driver was not injured.

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police said the driver of the Suzuki failed to stop, as a stop sign at the intersection was absent.

Mary W. Miller, 90

May 8, 2014

Mary W. Miller, 90, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at home.

She was born Jan. 3, 1924, in Millersburg, Ohio, a daughter of the late William J. and Sarah (Schrock) Weaver.

She was the wife of Eli J. Miller. He preceded her in death.
