Geraldine A. "Sue" McCormick, 66

March 20, 2014

Geraldine A. "Sue" McCormick, 66, of Smicksburg, passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mrs. McCormick was born August 11, 1947, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late John and Ethel (Lewis) Hill.

She is survived by her husband, William L. McCormick, of Smicksburg.

Geraldine was a member of the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Company, where she cooked many meals.

She loved Bingo and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Irene (Bernardo) Prutznal-Grube, 86

March 19, 2014

Irene (Bernardo) Prutznal-Grube, 86, of Punxsutawney, passed away, Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Grube was born Dec. 21, 1927, in Rossiter, a daughter of the late Fiore and Susie (Vadassy) Bernardo.

Ms. Grube was Catholic by faith. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and doing crafts.

School Board discusses budget

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There probably won't be a tax increase, but the Punxsutawney Area School Board is looking at using some of its fund balance in order to balance the district budget for fiscal year 2013-2014.

The board held a budget workshop in the central office board room on Wednesday, and there was plenty for the members to discuss.

DuBois woman killed in Route 255 rollover

HUSTON TOWNSHIP, CLEARFIELD COUNTY — DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police have reported a fatal traffic accident that took place on Tuesday night on Bennetts Valley Highway (Route 255) in Huston Township, Clearfield County and claimed the life of a 42-year-old DuBois woman.

Police said Tammi L. Markievich was traveling south on Route 255 at a high rate of speed in her 2003 Jeep Liberty at 10:20 p.m. Tuesday night when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a utility pole.

PSP investigating weekend burglary at Gruda Metals

HENDERSON TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania Police are asking for assistance from anyone with information on a burglary that took place at Gruda Metals in Henderson Township over the weekend.

Police said that on Sunday, between the hours of 1 and 2:30 a.m., unknown
actor(s) gained entry into the facility by breaking a side window into the scale house.

The actors then allegedly entered and removed numerous amounts of brass and copper, a welder, a socket set, a grease gun, a plasma cutter, a stereo system and a laptop.

Brookville YMCA’s Share the Love returns for a 3rd year

BROOKVILLE — Share the Love, an annual fundraiser for the Brookville YMCA, held in memory of Connor Gerg, a former YMCA lifeguard, will mark its third year this Saturday.

The event features a run/walk, as well as a soup sale, a bake sale, a silent auction, a merchandise sale and more, with all the money going back into the YMCA.

Beth Gerg, Connor’s mother, said the event began in February 2012, the brainchild of a group of people who wanted to find a way to do something for the community in his memory after his passing in 2011.

Daylily students pay a visit to Mulberry Square

Students from The Daylily Learning Center recently went to Mulberry Square to pass out cards that they made for the residents.

While visiting at Mulberry Square, the children sang a song to the residents and played a Bingo-style game called Bible Jingo.

The Daylily Learning Center, located at the First Church of God, is a ministry for homeschooling families.

Robert George “Hex” Hetrick, 56

Robert George “Hex” Hetrick, 56, of North Tonawanda, N.Y., died Friday, March 14, 2014.

He was born Oct. 11, 1957, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Donald Frank Hetrick and Jane Marie (Charcalla) Hetrick.

His mother survives and resides in North Tonawanda.

Mr. Hetrick worked as a heavy equipment operator for Tonawanda Coke, Kirchner, LLC. He enjoyed his work and spent a lot of his time at his job.

Mary Ann Dambrosia, 56

March 18, 2014

Mary Ann Dambrosia, 56, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Hershey Medical Center.

She was born July 23, 1957, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Thomas Arthur Dambrosia and Annabelle Marie (Baranick) Dambrosia, who survives and resides in Punxsutawney.

Mary Ann was a 1975 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

She was a member of S.S. Peter & Paul Byzantine Church.

She was helpful in supporting fundraising activities of the church, such as the trash and treasure sale and selling the homemade pierogies and Easter bread.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough will begin the search for a new police chief, as council accepted the resignation of Thomas Fedigan at a special meeting held on Monday.
