PAMS teachers receive McDonald’s grant

Three teachers from the Punxsutawney Area Middle School were awarded a $500 McDonald's MAC Grant for Teachers, which was presented by McDonald’s General Manager Karen Love and Assistant Manager Cathy Roush.

CONCERT ASSOCIATION TO CLOSE SEASON WITH PIANIST, HUMORIST, SONGWRITER DALE GONYEA

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A good old-fashioned Punxsutawney winter is behind us, days of snow and bitter cold a memory, and the Punxsutawney Concert Association will provide a fun-loving, relaxed evening for all to enjoy and celebrate the upcoming season of more warmth and color.

On Wednesday, March 26, the concert association will return to its concert program for the 2013-2014 season and present Dale Gonyea, an accomplished pianist with classical training.

Across the country, many who have heard him have dubbed him “heir to the piano-comedy throne of the late Victor Borge.”

CO-PAY AND DEDUCTIBLE COLLECTION POLICY TO CHANGE IN APRIL AT PAH

Punxsutawney Area Hospital’s co-pay and deductible payment requirements are changing in April, and those seeking the hospital’s services are encouraged to look into these new policies.

Judith B. Redding, 71

March 21, 2014

Judith B. Redding, 71, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, March 21, 2014, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born Aug. 21, 1936, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Harlan and Olive (Lewis) Spencer.

On Feb. 7, 1959, she married Thomas Frederick Redding. He preceded her in death on March 11, 2014.

Judy enjoyed being outside, working in the garden and going for walks.

Susan Mae Neal, 48

March 21, 2014

Susan Mae Neal, 48, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, March 20, 2014, at home.

She was born Aug. 3, 1965, in Newport, Rhode Island, the daughter of Robert M. and Marilyn (Potter) Deet.

She was married to Russell Neal, who survives.

She was employed as a medical secretary for DuBois Regional Medical Center in DuBois.

She is survived by her parents; her husband; one brother, Ronald Deet and wife Laura; and one sister, Barbara Raster and husband Jason.

She is also survived by two nephews, Lance and Lukas Deet of Punxsutawney; and one niece, Zoey Raster of St. Paul, Minn.

Salvation Army hoping for big things from Red Shield campaign after rough Red Kettle year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — On the heels of a very disappointing Red Kettle Campaign at Christmastime, the Punxsutawney Salvation Army is looking to rebound during its Red Shield Campaign and the annual golf tournament.

Capt. Keith Jache, co-commander of the Punxsutawney Salvation Army, said that the corps ended up about $12,000 short of the goal for the kettles.

The point of the project will be to highlight a member of the community who may be recognizable to many and tell his or her story. Today’s familiar face is Joyce Farcus.)

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Joyce Farcus is a familiar face. You may recognize her as the owner of Mary’s Place Restaurant, or perhaps you have seen her around the community.

Born and raised in Punxsy, Farcus is a 1974 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

Huey's debut novel blends past, present in a tale of enduring love & faithfulness

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In this area, the name Michele Huey is one that is easily associated with writing.

Her award-winning weekly newspaper column "God, Me, and a Cup of Tea" has led to a pair of devotional books.

Her work has appeared in a number of national publications.

And as a mentor for the Jerry B. Jenkins Christian Writers’ Guild and The Writing Academy, her influence on the writing community isn't limited to this area.

Huey's list of familiar accomplishments is far from short, but one thing rang true through all of her writing — she was always a writer of non-fiction.

Lisa Marie Ball, 25

March 20, 2014

Lisa Marie Ball, 25, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Shadyside Hospital.

She was born March 24, 1988, in DuBois, the daughter of Jill Elaine Redding and Douglas Scott Ball.

Lisa enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest.

She loved her family and her dog "Bo" and her boyfriend, Dan Lowmaster.

The sunny beach was one of her favorite places to be; she also enjoyed camping, being outdoors, four wheeling, mud and being with her many friends.

In spite of all the difficulties of her illness, Lisa always had a bright, beautiful smile for everyone.

Tracy L. Hartman, 35

Tracy L. Hartman, 35, of Pontzer Avenue, St. Marys, died unexpectedly on
Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys.

She was born on May 29, 1978, in St. Marys, a daughter of Garrett "Gary" and Pamela (Perkins) Hartman, of St. Marys.

Tracy was a graduate of SMAHS, Class of 1996, where she had been very active in the color guard.

She had worked at several area businesses, most recently at GKN.

She had a great love for her children and her animals and will always be remembered for her kindness, generosity and big heart.
