Junior Varsity Chucks rally for season-ending victory over Bison

CLEARFIELD — In an unusual scenario to end the season, the Punxsy junior varsity baseball squad found itself in a considerable deficit Friday.

Trailing 7-3, the JV Chucks showcased the stellar offense they have shown all season for what would be a game-deciding five-run sixth inning, before holding the Bison scoreless in the final two frames for an 8-7 season finale victory.

“What a great game; back-and-forth lead changes,” pointed out Punxsy JV head coach Rodney Thompson.

Luther and brother, who have been in Venezuela, South America, during the past winter have returned home.

They have been doing that country with a merry-go-round, the first that ever operated there, and report a very successful venture.

Shannon L. Page, 33, Columbus, Ohio, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville, Ohio.

She was born April 20, 1980, a daughter of Mark and Cindy (Reitz) Page, who both survive.

She was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Bowling Green University with a
bachelor’s of science in biology.

She was involved in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Organization, she loved to read and she was an avid football fan and member of the Stamping Club.

She loved movies, her family and friends and her dog, Hershey.

She worked for the Ohio Department of Health as an epidemiologist.

Spaghetti dinner to be held tonight in memory of boy with heart for animals, others

Today, family and friends will host a spaghetti dinner at the Rossiter American Legion from 3 to 8 p.m.

All proceeds from the dinner and auction will go to the family of Ivan Coblentz to help pay for his medical bills.

Members of the Amish community will serve spaghetti, meatballs, rolls, salad, homemade desserts and beverages.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under, with children 2 and under eating free.

Mayor proclaims Saturday ‘Punxsy Polamalu Day’

Today, the “Punxsy Polamalus” will be participating in the McDonald’s Steelers Trivia Contest in Pittsburgh.

Friday, Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle issued the following proclamation:

“Whereas Punxsutawney has always had some great trivia teams; whereas Mike Stello has always represented Punxsutawney well;

whereas Bob Long (pictured above, right, with Wehrle) has always represented Punxsutawney well;

whereas Nick Digilarmo has always represented Punxsutawney well;

A perfect day for a yard sale — SS.C.D. style

Its officially yard sale season, and the women of the Catholic Daughters of America were busy getting ready for their annual yard sale that will be held today at the SS.C.D. auditorium.

The yard sale will begin at 9 a.m. and run until 4 p.m.

James Dowling Postlewaite, 69

James D. Postlewaite, 69, Erie, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2013, at UPMC Hamot.

He was born March 31, 1944, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late James Blair and Joanna Margaret (Anthony) Postlewaite.

Jim was retired from General Electric Co., for which he worked 42-and-a-half years.
Most of his years there were spent in the Power House.

He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting with his grandson, who got his first buck in 2011.

He enjoyed restoring, displaying and pulling antique tractors, especially his two-cylinder John Deeres.

Valgene E. “Val” Frye, 71

Valgene E. “Val” Frye, 71, of Chicora, Pa., entered his heavenly home on Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Val was born at home in Rochester Mills, Pa., to the late Blair G. and Edna (Leasure) Frye, on June 24, 1941.

Mr. Frye graduated from Marion Center High School with the Class of 1959.

He went on to graduate from Butler County Community College with an A.A. Degree in business management in 1982.

Val married the love of his life, Carolyn A. (Hosack) Frye, on April 28, 1962, in Lickingville, Pa.

Lloyd E. Fisher, 73

May 17, 2013

Lloyd E. Fisher, 73, of Hamilton, passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Fisher was born Nov. 11, 1939, a son of the late Lloyd E. Fisher Sr. and Rose (Lorenzo) Fisher.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara L. (Sheesley) Fisher, of Hamilton.

They were married Feb. 22, 1964.

Mr. Fisher was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served two tours in Vietnam, two tours in Germany and three years in Panama before retiring as a Sgt. 1st Class after 20 years and receiving the Purple Heart.
