PAHS’ Weather Capital Robotics Club turning heads, battling bots and earning accolades

Council tables request for new hoops

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council tabled the request for new basketball hoops, backboards and posts for the basketball courts at Harmon Field at Monday's council meeting.

Chamber Director Lellock changing hats, search for new director to begin

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Jeff Curtis, president of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, has announced that the Chamber’s executive director has resigned to take a position at another local establishment.

Marlene Lellock has accepted the newly-created position as executive director of the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center.

Screen-free fun always available throughout town

A cupcake parade was held recently at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library as a part of Screen-Free Week.

Local organizations held indoor and outdoor activities for children, in the hopes of giving them the opportunity to be more active.

The purpose of Screen-Free Week was to get kids away from televisions, computers and iPad screens — a mission that lasts far beyond one week a year.

Dolores "Dolly" S. Davis, 82

Dolores "Dolly" S. Davis, 82, of Big Run, died Monday, May 13, 2013, at DuBois Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 31, 1931, in Cloe, a daughter of the late Rowland I. and Blanche (Baun) Smith.

On Oct. 8, 1949, she married Richard Davis. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1965.

Dolly previously worked as a bartender at the Punxsutawney Moose Club and at Little Canada.

She later worked as a clerk at JC Penney.

Melvin Leroy Hoffman, 91

May 14, 2013

Melvin Leroy Hoffman, 91, Coolspring, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

He was born April 15, 1921, in Coolspring, a son of Lee Hoffman and Icie Hinderliter Hoffman.

In 1992, he married Ruth Elizabeth Jones, who survives.

Mr. Hoffman worked as a coal miner for R&P Coal Co.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the 14th Infantry, 71st Division, during World War II.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include three daughters and three sons, Lavonne Caylor (Lee) of Coolspring, Donald

Nancy Lee (Tuck) Chandler, 66

Nancy Lee (Tuck) Chandler, 66, of Punxsutawney, died Monday, May 13, 2013, at Mt. Nittany Medical Center in State College, Pa.

She was born on May 4, 1947, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Charles and Susan (Hardy) Weiss.

She married Richard D. Tuck in November of 1963. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2010.

She married James Chandler on Sept. 29, 2012. He survives.

She was a member of the Punxsutawney Eagles and the American Legion Auxiliary in Bellefonte, Pa., and in Punxsutawney.

She was also a member of the Undine Fire Company of Bellefonte.

The Punxsy Lady Chucks honored eight seniors during their "Senior Day" pre-game festivities.

Lady Tigers capitalize in fourth inning to spoil Lady Chucks 'Senior Day'

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In an afternoon which felt more like late October than mid May, the Punxsy softball team saw one of its two toughest innings of the season on Monday.

Trailing 3-2, the visiting Lady Tigers of Hollidaysburg capitalized on three Punxsy errors and added some hard hits at the plate to score 10 times to spoil "Senior Day" by a 14-4 final score.

"We lengthened it (the inning) for them. They hit the ball hard as well," noted Lady Chucks' head coach Alan Pifer. "They capitalized on everything."

Sportsburg recycling site to close

This recycling site in Sportsburg is slated to close July 1.

Donna Cooper, solid waste/recycling coordinator for the Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority, announced the closure last week at the Young Township supervisors’ meeting.
