Marilyn Louise (Yeaney) Himes, 72

Marilyn Louise (Yeaney) Himes, 72, Huntingdon, Oneida Township, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at home, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Mrs. Himes was born in Punxsutawney, a daughter of Howard W. and Helen M. (Kromer) Yeaney.

She was united in marriage to Peter G. Himes on April 19, 1957, at the Ringgold United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gorman officiating.

Her husband preceded her in death on April 5, 2012, after 55 years of marriage.

She attended Punxsutawney Area High School.

Trevor Lee Stiner, 36

Trevor Lee Stiner, 36, of Dormont, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at home.
He was born Aug. 9, 1976, in York, Pa., the son of Charlotte Ann (Harrison) Hollopeter and husband Keith of Big Run, and Dennis Lee Stiner.

He was a 1994 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School. He earned an associate’s degree in CAD from Triangle Tech.

Trevor liked to help his mother and Keith with landscaping and yard work. He built a beautiful patio area for their enjoyment.

He loved his family and children.

His hobbies included golf and playing a good game of poker.

John V. Harriger, 85

John V. Harriger, 85, of Mayport, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013. He was born on Nov. 3, 1927, in Alcola, the son of Ernest and Lula (Bish) Harriger.

He was first married to Mae (Himes), and she preceded him in death. He
then married Dorothy (Brocious), who survives.

John served his country during World War II with the United States Army. He was a member of the Langville Methodist Church until it closed, and he went to North Freedom United Methodist Church. He enjoyed going to church, music and doing wood crafts.

PSP-Punxsy reports three arrested for delivery of heroin

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Over the past two days, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police have charged three individuals, including two local men, with delivery of heroin after search warrant and arrest warrants were
served in two separate incidents — one at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Monday and another at approximately 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

FCOG hosting blood drive in honor of Hoover

The First Church of God on Route 36 in Punxsutawney will hold a blood drive on Friday in honor of Martha Hoover (pictured), who has been the coordinator of the drive since it began at the church.

After many years of volunteer work, Martha has decided to retire and spend time with her family and friends.

Area residents are invited to come to the church on Friday between noon and 6 p.m. to donate blood in Martha’s honor.

Primary elections show some interesting results, but incumbents hold most positions unopposed

BROOKVILLE — With reports all day Tuesday saying that voters' numbers were low across the state for the primary election, 5,120 Jefferson County residents headed to the polls to vote, with 3,421 Repub-lican ballots being cast and 1,699 Democratic ballots being submitted, according to the unofficial results released by the county Tuesday evening.

Spirit names Elementary Teacher of the Year

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday morning, The Spirit named Nancy Lazorchak the Punxsutawney Area Middle School Teacher of the Year, while Ryan Hayden was honored at the high school.

The awards are based on ballots cast by Spirit readers.

Velma Olovett Bowser, 95

Velma Olovett Bowser, 95, of Big Run, died Monday, May 20, 2013, at home with her loving family.

Velma was born on June 18, 1917, in Ernest, a daughter of the late Alfred and Sarah (Morgan) Schierer.

On April 27, 1946, she married Glenn Clark Bowser.

She made her own wedding gown from a parachute from World War II. Her husband preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1963.

Velma was a member of the Big Run Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Bowser was the Big Run 2011 Citizen of Year.

Glenna L. (Keefer) Smith, 76

Glenna L. (Keefer) Smith, 76, of McKean, Pa., and formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, at St. Mary’s Home at Asbury Ridge.

She was born May 27, 1936, in Clarion, a daughter of the late R. Kenneth and Alice (Steffy) Keefer.

Glenna was a member of Lakewood United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed quilting, sewing, baking, crossword puzzles and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Donald R. Smith.

A search warrant was served last night on West Mahoning Street in Punxsutawney. Heroin, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cash were seized.
