Ronald J. Vandervort, 68

June 4, 2013

Ronald J. Vandervort, 68, Brookville, died Monday, June 3, 2013, at Brookville Hospital.

He was born June 26, 1944, in Brookville, a son of William Homer Vandervort and Rhoda Himes Vandervort.

Sept. 28, 1963, in Emerickville, Pa., he married Sandra Main, who survives.

Mr. Vandevort was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Vietnam Conflict from 1963-1967 on two vessels, the USS Champlain and the USS Independence.

He worked at Hawthorne Manufacturing in Hawthorne, Pa., Eljer in Ford City, Pa., and BevAir in Brookville.

Pool opens Tuesday!

The George C. Brown Community Pool opens Tuesday at noon for the season.

The pool is open every day, weather permitting, from noon to 6 p.m., and on Thursday, swimmers are granted an extra two hours, with the pool being open until 8 p.m.

Monday, pool staffers took a break from last-minute preparations to pose for a photo with Rotary representatives.

School's out for summer!

It may just be the most anticipated day of the year — right up there with Christmas and a birthday.

Monday, a half day of school marked the end of the school year for students across the Punxsutawney Area School District, SS.C.D. and the Punxsutawney Christian School.

Students were all smiles as they headed out of the buildings, free to rejuvenate themselves with whatever activities they have planned for the summer.

David Lee Rossey, 52

David Lee Rossey, 52, Brookville, died Monday, June 3, 2013, in Brookville.

He was born Oct. 19, 1960, in Ramseytown, Pa., a son of Sheldon Dean Rossey, who survives, and the late Elizabeth A. “Danny” McQuown Rossey, who preceded him in death Dec. 5, 1990.

David was married to Sharon Reinsel, who survives.

He worked for Lloyd Smith's of Brookville for 30 years.

He was president of the Jefferson County Long Rifles Association and a trustee at Evangelical United Methodist Church in Brookville.

James Leroy Titler, 71

June 3, 2013

James Leroy Titler, 71, Northpoint, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the home of his daughter, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Feb. 28, 1942, in Toledo, Ohio, a son of the late Kenneth Leroy and Roberta Jane (Miller) Titler.

On Oct. 1, 1960, he married the former Velva Louise Wood. She survives.

Mr. Titler was a member of Center Hill Community Church.

He was very dedicated to the church.

He was board president of the church, and his last project was overseeing the expansion of the church.

Trailing 4-2 with one out and two opposing runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth, Punxsy’s baseball team made a defensive stand in the opening round of the PIAA State Playoffs when left fielder Dakotah Byers hit cut-off man John Matthews, who relayed the ball to catcher Garrett Zimmerman (pictured, left) to tag out Hopewell’s Shane Martin (right) and complete a double play. The Chucks rode the momentum to battle back and score three in the top of the sixth, and Punxsy held on for a 5-4 win, catapulting itself into the next round.

Traffic Alert: PennDOT reports Route 119 surface improvement project in progress

PUNXSUTAWNEY — PennDOT has announced that the road carrying Route 119 in Punxsutawney Borough is in the process of being improved.

One-lane alternating nighttime flagging restrictions are now be in place on Route 119, between the intersections of Route 119 and Route 36 and Route 119 and the B&R Railroad Tracks.

These restrictions will be in place for one week, or as weather permits.
The project will consist of the application of a leveling course to smooth the roadway and the replacement of all traffic markings.

PAHS recently named its seven MVPs for the spring sports season. Crosstown Ministries VBS kicks off Tuesday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you are looking for something to keep your children busy the day after school lets out today, then think about sending them to the Crosstown Ministries Vacation Bible School, to be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday through Friday at Grace United Methodist Church located on Hillcrest Drive in Young Township, just below Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Shelley Bishop, Christian education leader at Grace United Methodist Church, said that Crosstown Ministries consists of Grace, Woodland Avenue and Mount Tabor United Methodist churches.

PAHS Alumni Band to reunite for free community concert June 23

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Organizers of last year’s first ever PAHS Alumni Band concert are finalizing plans to do it again this summer.

Last year’s strong alumni turnout and rousing musical results inspired dozens of former Punxsutawney Area High School band members to sign up for a repeat performance.

This year’s concert is once again free to the public and will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at the Punxsutawney Area High School auditorium.
