Marie E. Bennett, 80

June 19, 2013

Marie E. Bennett, 80, of Clarion, formerly of Big Run, passed away Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at County Spring Personal Care Home, surrounded by her loving family and care givers.

Marie was born October 26, 1932, in New Millport, Clearfield County, a daughter of the late James M. and Sylvia Hullihen.

She was Protestant by faith.

On Jan. 22, 1948, she married the love of her life James F. Bennett, who preceded her in death Aug. 26, 2008.

The summer reading program at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library officially kicked off Monday afternoon. Children gathered on the second floor of the library, where they were able to enjoy a magic show by M&M Magic. After the magic show, parents and children went through registration, and each child received a name tag. In order to attend the closing party on Aug. 6, each child must read a total of 10 books.

Francis Ardell Barnett, 85

Francis Ardell Barnett, 85, of Punxsutawney, passed away June 18, 2013, at his residence.

He was born July 13, 1927, in Jefferson County, a son of the late Jennings Clay and Margaret Elaine (Berkey) Barnett.

Francis was married to Shirley Lou (Martin) Barnett, who preceded him in death.

Francis was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II.
He is survived by three daughters, Marsha Cochrane and husband Dave of

One year and going strong: Greenawalt’s dream carries on through H.C.’s Last Stop

Out in the Punxsutawney countryside is a hidden little gem, just right off Route 36, called H.C.'s Last Stop.

A quaint little restaurant with a breathtaking view, it is owned and operated by 27-year-old Cassi Greenawalt. The restaurant celebrated its first anniversary on June 12.

It’s time to shine: Punxsy All-Star season underway

The Groundhog Little League’s All-Star season got underway Monday evening in Punxsutawney, and Kylee Lingenfelter was on fire from the circle as the Punxsy 11- and 12-year-old Major League Softball All-Stars earned a 7-0 win over Brookville.

Lingenfelter struck out 11 batters in a row and had just one walk during Monday night's contest.

OOPS! A BIG TRUCK GETS STUCK

An oversize load truck from Midland was traveling north hauling equipment on the Bells Mills/Cloe Road and tried to turn left onto Route 119, when the trailer ran out of clearance and got stuck, nearly blocking the entire road at 6:44 p.m. Monday in Bell Township.

Pennsylvania State Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Elk Run Volunteer Fire Company, who directed traffic until the scene was cleared.

No further information was available at Spirit press time.

Quite the project: Volunteers make canopy a fixture in Barclay Square once again

Members of the Groundhog Festival Committee and other volunteers assisted with the raising of the new canopy from start to finish on Monday evening in Barclay Square.

The canopy will be used for the festival, Music in the Park and many other events.

The work continues: Elk Run Bridge detour begins Tuesday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At last Monday's Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting, the Route 119 Elk Run Bridge Project was discussed, and PennDOT announced Monday that the project's largest detour will take effect this morning.

Beginning Tuesday, at 5:30 a.m., Route 119 will close to traffic between Jenks Avenue and Route 310, a release issued by Deborah Casadei, PennDOT District 10's public information and safety press officer said.

The release said the road closure will be in place until late September.

Sara Viva (Meckley) Griffith, 91

Sara Viva (Meckley) Griffith, 91, Punxsutawney, formerly of Cherry Tree, Pa., died Monday, June 17, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd., in Hillsdale, Pa., where a 1 p.m. funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2013, with Pastor Tim Bash officiating.

Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery near New Washington, Pa.

A full obituary will be published Wednesday, June 19.

Arthur Frederick Dobson, Jr., 66

Arthur Frederick Dobson, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, suddenly, following an accident on a biking trip with friends in Croatia, Slovinia and Italy at age 66.

He experienced no pain and died doing what he loved: riding his bike in an extremely beautiful part of the world, surrounded by friends.

Born in North Plainfield, N.J., Art was a loving husband and the greatest dad in the world.

He awaited the birth of his first granddaughter with as much joy as a heart could hold.

He was a beloved brother, uncle and friend to many.
