Firefighters respond to Wendy’s for mulch fire

July 15, 2013

Punxsutawney firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the wall at Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburgers on Hampton Avenue at 6:48 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters from Central, Elk Run and Lindsey responded to the scene and verified there was smoke coming from the wall in the northeast corner of the building.

Following an interior investigation with thermal imaging cameras, it was discovered that the smoke originated from the building's exterior,

The International Convention of the Epworth League

Will be held at Toronto, Can., July 15 to 18.

Delegates from all quarters of the world will be present. It is the second largest convention of the world and the famous hospitality of the beautiful city of Toronto will be taxed to its utmost to provide for those in attendance.

Police: Boy, 12, accidentally shoots self in shoulder

BELL TOWNSHIP — A 12-year-old Punxsutawney male accidentally shot himself in the right shoulder while unknowingly playing with his father’s 22 long gun, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said the gun, which was located in the father’s bedroom, had a round in the chamber, and the boy accidentally bumped the trigger, causing the gun to go off and shoot a round into his shoulder.

The incident occurred on July 9 along Elbel Road in Bell Township.

Police said the boy was treated at Punxsutawney Area Hospital and released.

2013 Jefferson County Fair Royalty

The 2013 Jefferson County Fair Queen was crowned Sunday, the opening day of the fair, which runs through Saturday in Brookville.

Ernest Eugene Certo, 88

Ernest Eugene Certo, 88, of Punxsutawney, died Sunday, July 14, 2013,
at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

He was born May 5, 1925, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Joseph and Grace (Spader) Certo.

He was a Navy Seaman 1st Class, serving during World War II on the USS Saratoga, which sailed the Pacific and Northwest Pacific.

The ship was bombed by Japanese Kamikaze pilots off the shores of Iwo Jima; many men perished that day, and Seaman Certo was one of the wounded.

He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and other medals during his service in the United States Navy.

Annual Relay for Life Leads survivors down road to a cure, raises over $39K

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The day started off a bit cloudy and grey, but by evening the sun rose high in the sky and began shining down at just the right moment — the Survivor Ceremony.

The Relay for Life of Punxsutawney event was held Saturday, with 13 teams participating in this year’s event, which raised over $39,000, according to Jessica Carbaugh, Relay for Life representative.

— 1:30 p.m. Opening ceremonies with emcee Karen Uplinger, speaker Pastor Leon Blose from Pleasant Valley Methodist and music arranged by Lee Grace Foulkrod of Sykesville

— 2:30 p.m. Queen and Junior Queen competitions (no princess or junior princess competitions this year)

Fresh off renovations, Miller Brothers Furniture re-opens with ribbon cutting

Following some renovations, Miller Brothers Furniture in downtown Punxsutawney reopened with a ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce on Friday morning. Some of the changes include new products and a “pottery barn” look.

Donald K. Schrock, Jr., 53

July 11, 2013

Donald K. Schrock, Jr., 53, of Jay, Maine, passed away on Feb. 11, 2013, following complications from a life-long illness of primary immune deficiency disease.

He was born on July 27, 1957, in North Tonawanda, N.Y., the son of Donald (Kerm) and Janet (Kiehl) Schrock, Sr. of Winthrop, Maine, and both formerly of Punxsutawney.

He was the grandson of Gene and Hazel (Stahlman) Kiehl and Ezra and Jeanette (Snyder) Schrock, all life-long residents of the Punsxy area until their passings.
