Dorothy A. Miglicio, 85

Dorothy A. Miglicio, 85, of York, Pa., and formerly of Warren, Pa., died May 5, 2013, at 7:05 a.m. at Manor Care Health Services in Dallastown, Pa., York County.

Dorothy was the spouse of the late Francis A. Miglicio, who died in 2008.
She was born Aug. 21, 1927, in Punxsutawney, the daughter of the late Frank and Dora (Kaylor) Handyside.

Dorothy was a retired cashier for the Baltimore Life Insurance Co. in Warren, and she retired in 1988 after 30 years of service.

She was a 1945 graduate of Punxsutawney High School.

Mahoning Valley Milling to host 2nd Amendment rally Saturday

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A local gun dealer will hold a rally Saturday in support of Second Amendment rights.

"We're holding a rally for the Second Amendment at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mahoning Valley Milling on Old Indiana Street to show people in the area that there's a lot of people out here who support the Second Amendment," said John Keeley, gun shop manager at Mahoning Valley Milling.

He said that they will also demonstrate the importance of the Second Amendment in regards to the other amendments.

Weather Discovery Center welcomes new director of education and programming

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There is a new director of education and programming at the local Weather Discovery Center, and those who know her best will tell you that she always wears a cheery smile.

The new director, Punxsy native Amanda Hornack, is a 1998 graduate of Punxsutawney Area High School.

She graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2002, where she earned a bachelor’s of science degree in education.

Hornack assumed her new position on March 1, but had been involved with the center for years.

21st Annual NALC Food Drive this Saturday

The 21st Annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive will be held this Saturday.

Post offices in Anita, Brockway, Brookville, Falls Creek, Hamilton, Punxsutawney and Summerville are participating.

Residents can leave a bag filled with donated food — such as peanut butter, canned soups, meats and fish, canned juices, fruits, veggies and boxed goods — at their mailboxes for pickup.

Helen E. Dinger, 70

Helen E. Dinger, 70, of Grove City,previously of Harrisville, Pa., died Wednesday May 8, 2013, at Butler Memorial Hospital in Butler, Pa.

She was born on May 12, 1942, in Knox, Pa., a daughter of Warren C.
Shaffer and Emma A. (Reed) Shaffer.

She was a 1960 graduate of Keystone High School in Knox, Pa.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of West Unity Community Church in Harrisville, Pa.

Helen was a member of the Ladies’ Missionary Society of the church.

She enjoyed fishing with her husband, crossword puzzles, reading, bingo and playing cards.

Chucks put together game-deciding third inning to sweep series from Beavers

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Balls take some odd bounces and the Chucks experienced a handful of these early in the baseball game on Wednesday.

Punxsy did not let the early deficit dictate its game by putting together a game-deciding seven-run third inning to overtake rival DuBois, 10-6, in Punxsutawney.

The Chucks (11-5) victory gave them the season series sweep of the Beavers (12-4). Punxsy claimed a 3-1 road decision on April 17.

"We got some bad hops early and the ball found some holes," pointed out Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey. "All-in-all, it was a good win against a good baseball team."

Hot-playing DuBois cools off Punxsy softball

DUBOIS — It is always tough to face a team that is red hot.
This was the challenge the Punxsy softball squad had on its plate on Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Chucks were able to take an early one-run lead before the hot-playing Lady Beavers answered with three runs and never trailed again for a 6-3 victory in DuBois.

The victory was DuBois (10-4) ninth in a row.

The Lady Beavers last defeat came at the hands of the Lady Chucks (11-4) on April 17 by a 1-0 final.

Chalk on the Walk: IUP-Punxsy students bring awareness to social issues through art

The Annual Sidewalk Commentary Contest was held Wednesday for some of the students at the IUP-Punxsy Campus.

Students were asked to do a drawing using sidewalk chalk, and the drawing had to relate to an issue that was important to them.

Social topics such as politics, diversity, human rights and health had to be expressed through the drawing.

Winning first place was (from left) DeAndre Lawson, Jordan Williams and Phill Euston.

Police: Punxsy man arrested on numerous forgery, theft charges

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Borough Police Department reported that Steven D. Miller, 18, of Punxsutawney, was charged with forgery (24 counts), identity theft (24 counts), theft by unlawful taking (25 counts),
receiving stolen property (25 counts), criminal conspiracy (45 counts) and theft by deception (24 counts).

Police said the charges stem from a March 19 incident on Belmont Avenue.

Miller was committed to the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of posting $80,000 cash bail.

‘Laughing all the Way’ to a good cause

Tom Curry (left), Ginger Momyer (center) and Kathy Bish paused during rehearsal for "Laughing All the Way," an evening of entertainment being presented this month by the Jefferson County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) and the Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging.

The show benefits PASR's Educational Support Grant and the activities of each hosting senior center. In addition to the light-hearted songs, skits, jokes, a monologue and a most unusual fashion show, audiences will be treated to an assortment of desserts and beverages during intermission.
