Lyle A. "Zoog" Welsh, 79

Lyle A. "Zoog" Welsh, 79, of Big Run, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at DuBois Nursing Home.

He was born near Big Run on Feb. 13, 1934, the son of the late Roy James "Gabe" Welsh and Anna Lee (Davis) Welsh.

On July 3, 1954, he married the former Wilma "Billie Jo" Haag. She survives.

Mr. Welsh served in the United States Army in the Signal Corp as a field radio repairman in New Jersey and Puerto Rica during the Korean Conflict.

He received an honorable discharge in 1956.

He was a retired setup man for Rockwell Manufacturing and Invensys at the DuBois plant.

Punxsy natives join together to start new family tradition

PUNXSUTAWNEY — There are bonds that cannot be broken no matter the distance that separates you.

For the mothers and daughters of one family, that bond has strengthened with time.

Kay DeLuca, of New Orleans, and her sister, Karen Verdill-Gratz, of
Indianapolis, Ind., were born and raised in Punxsutawney.

Though DeLuca comes back once a year to visit their mother, Barbara Verdill, her sister hadn’t been home in three years.

JUST A ‘DUCKY’ DAY AT THE POOL

It was the perfect day to enjoy some free swimming and some entertainment, as the official Duck Derby benefitting SPLASH began at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

More than 500 plastic ducks were dumped into the George C. Brown Pool and had to make their way across the water to the finish line.

Helping them along were a couple of lifeguards and volunteers, as many onlookers crowded around the pool and waited in anticipation to learn the winners.

Sixteen prizes were awarded, with the top prize being $500.

DuBois man charged with aggravated assault after allegedly driving car at woman

REYNOLDSVILLE — A 35-year-old DuBois man has been charged with aggravated assault, recklessly endangering another person and driving while suspended following an argument with a 36-year-old DuBois woman, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said David V. August and the alleged victim were involved in a verbal argument at 6:45 p.m. Saturday that began in Reynoldsville and continued while they drove along Route 322 and Route 830 in Pine Creek Township.

When August stopped the car on Route 830, police said the woman got out and fled south on the road.

Keziah E. “Harve” Filler, 90

Keziah E. Filler, 90, Rossiter, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Mahoning Riverside Manor.

She was born Jan. 31, 1923, in Canoe Township, a daughter of the late Theda (Casaday) and Samuel Bowers.

She was married to Grant “Nanners” Filler, who preceded her in death on April 6, 1988.

She attended the Canoe Ridge Church of God.

She was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Union Cemetery Association.

Mrs. Filler enjoyed spending her winters in Arizona with family.

Pennington's talents power Miners to 1-0 shutout over Denny's

The Miners' Braedon Pennington's (pictured) talents at the mound and plate powered Rossiter to a 1-0 shutout over Denny's Beer Barrel Pub Thursday night at Clearfield High School. In addition to throwing all seven innings for a shutout, Pennington blasted a solo home run to notch the only run scored on the night. Pete Meterko, Kyle Neal, Rick Bishop, Garrett Zimmerman and Jordan Mesoraco each recorded a hit for the winning squad, as well. With the win, the Miners took a 1-0 lead over Denny's in the best-of-seven Federation League semi-finals.

OPEN ACOUSTIC JAM SESSIONS!

The members of the Mahoning Hills Social Center, located at 19298 Route 119 Highway North beside Longview Elementary School, are inviting you to come jam with them!

Mahoning Hills holds open acoustic jam sessions at least once a month on a Monday morning from 10 a.m. until noon, and they are open to the public.

There is no admission charge to come and enjoy the music.

This might be just the gig for anyone who likes to sing, enjoys music or just wants to get out of the house.

Congratulations to Tom Dunkel for earning July Garden of the Month honors

When it comes to the artistic creativity of gardening, Tom Dunkel is ahead of the game.

Recently chosen as Garden of the Month recipient for July by the Punxsutawney Garden Club, Dunkel has not only a vast variety of flowers, but also a great deal of builders’ design invested in his garden.

He has built an entire deck, put in an inground pool and built a pool house and a shade deck to accent the plant life, as well.

Brookville man charged with arson, other counts

BROOKVILLE — Brookville Borough Police are filing charges of arson, criminal mischief, recklessly endangering another person and criminal trespass against Scott E. Bennett, 46, Brookville, following an investigation into a July 18 fire at an apartment building at 182 Jefferson St. in the borough.

The Brookville Volunteer Fire Co., along with other departments, was called to the scene at 1:42 a.m. July 18 for a reported working structure fire at the building owned by a Walston man.

The fire was extinguished with minor smoke and water damage.
