Michael A. "Mike" Larko, 98

Michael A. "Mike" Larko, 98, of Penn Hills, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Ligonier Gardens.

Mike was the beloved husband of the late Margaret J. Larko; the father of John Larko, of Leechburg, Pa., Michael J. (Marsha) Larko, of Plum, Pa., Rev. Ronald Larko, of Uniontown, Pa., Thomas (Karen) Larko, of Punxsutawney, Anna (John) Maier, of New Florence, Pa., Patricia (Ed) Morris, of Turtle Creek, Pa., and the late Robert G. Larko; the grandfather of 16; and the great-grandfather of 11. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Miners complete sweep of Denny's, advance to finals

Tuesday night, the Rossiter Miners completed a four-game sweep of Denny's Beer Barrel Pub — the Federation League regular season top seed — in the semi-finals to advance to the finals.

The Miners are unsure who they will play, as the series between the Sykesville Senators and the DuBois Rockets is still going on.

Winslow Lawn and Garden grand opening set for Saturday

Winslow Lawn and Garden will hold its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the store in Hudson.

Kiwanis, Key Club join together for 5K to fight maternal & neonatal tetanus

The Kiwanis Club of Punxsutawney and the Punxsutawney Area High School Key Club are sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at the Mahoning Shadow Trail.

Registration begins at 6:30 p.m., and participants who pre-register will be receive a T-shirt and a glow stick.

The event is being held to raise money to eliminate MNT (maternal and neonatal tetanus).

Red Cross to hold memorial blood drive Friday at S.S.C.D. in honor of Joseph Rougeux

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The American Red Cross is holding a special blood drive this Friday in memory of Joseph Rougeux.

In 1998, Rougeux was diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer.

In 2005, he passed away from a heart attack but was cancer free.

During his treatment, Rougeux had numerous blood transfusions and knew the importance of blood donation.

He was a dedicated Red Cross volunteer and donor who had been recorded as a 24-gallon blood donor.

His wife and children sponsor this blood drive to honor him and to bring awareness to the need for blood donations.

new faces lately, and the latest in that line is the First United Methodist Church in town, which recently introduced Rev. Paul Ritchey as its new pastor.

SBA Disaster Outreach Center to open in Reynoldsville in response to the June 27 flood

BROOKVILLE — The Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services is reminding residents and businesses affected by severe storms and flooding between June 27 and July 12 that they can apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration at a Disaster Loan Outreach Center set up in Reynoldsville.

According to Tracy W. Zents, Director of Emergency Services, loans are available in response to a letter from Gov. Tom Corbett on July 12, requesting a disaster declaration by the SBA.

Weekend concert to showcase historical Hinners organ at St. Adrian’s Roman Catholic Church

DELANCEY — Every town has a story to tell — one rich with history and legends.

For those who live in Adrian, also known as DeLancey, a piece of that history will be celebrated at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the St. Adrian's Roman Catholic Church, courtesy of the PRIDE Coal Memorial Committee.

Sitting inside the church is an old antique Hinners pipe organ that is over 120 years old.

The historical organ was manufactured by the Hinners and Albertson Organ Company of Pekin, Ill.

Purchased by the church, it was shipped to Adrian in pieces by train.

PSP-DuBois makes arrest in Reynoldsville drug, stolen property case

REYNOLDSVILLE — The Pennsylvania State Police Troop C VICE unit began an undercover investigation on July 2 into the distribution of heroin in the Reynoldsville area.

The Troop C VICE unit made several undercover purchases of heroin from Paul Neves, 30, Reynoldsville, in and around his Brown Street residence, according to police.

On July 19, Neves was taken into custody on a traffic stop in the Reynoldsville Borough.

A search warrant was then conducted at Neves' residence.

Alice Mary O’Dell, 58

July 22, 2013

Alice Mary O’Dell, 58, of Indiana, died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at her home.

She was born in 1954 in Punxsutawney to Mark and Bertha Froese Anthony.

Alice attended Grace United Methodist Church and was a member of the Indiana Arts Assoc.

As a Master Gardner, she enjoyed her membership in the Indiana Garden Club.

She was employed by First Commonwealth Bank for 18 years in the data processing department and finished her career as a vice president.
