Daisy M. Sandstrom, 93

August 16, 2013

Daisy M. Sandstrom, 93, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mrs. Sandstrom was born May 7, 1920, in Rossiter, the daughter of the late Domer Bishop and Annabella (White) Bishop.

Daisy was preceded in death by her husband, Earl G. Sandstrom, in 1988.

Give us some ‘Moore’ Music in the Park

Once again, the weather “played nice” for Music in the Park, as The Moore Brothers took the stage in Barclay Square Thursday night.

The group (top photo) played a variety of music, including a little bluegrass.

Leticia A. "Laddie" Waltman, 68

August 15, 2013

Leticia A. "Laddie" Waltman, 68, of Punxsutawney, passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Leticia was born July 9, 1945, in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of the late Anthony Tuman and Angeline (Schuster) Tuman-Bennett.

Mrs. Waltman is survived by her husband of 50 years, John H. Waltman, Sr., of Punxsutawney. They were married July 23, 1963.

Leticia loved going to stock car races and car shows with her husband,
gardening, playing board games with her grandchildren and putting together puzzles.

Lady Chucks enter season with high expectations

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Walking down the halls of Punxsutawney Area High School, you can hear the squeaking of shoes coming from the hardwood floor in the distance. The distinct noise, added to the sound "Let's go girls," can only mean one thing.

Volleyball season is here.

The encouraging words of second-year Head Coach Heather Good shows that the Lady Chucks mean business once again.
After the season the Lady Chucks had last year, expectations are very high.

After defeating Bradford Area High School in the District IX title game, Punxsy went on to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

Violet B. Wolfe, 81

August 14, 2013

Violet B. Wolfe, 81, of Brookville, formerly of New Brighton, Ct., passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, at Brookville Hospital.

Mrs. Wolfe was born June 20, 1932, in Altona, New York, the daughter of the late Frank Hill and Cathleen (Coolidge) Hill.

Violet is survived by her husband, Willis, of Brookville.

A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother,

Voilet loved keeping a beautiful home and being close to her children and grandchildren.

With first day of school approaching, council taking traffic precautions early

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Motorists in Punxsy continue to deal with two major detours, as the Route 119 Ridge Avenue/Elk Run bridge continues to be closed along with the Saw Mill Run Route 36 / West Mahoning Street bridge in the west end remaining closed. Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager, said that when school resumes, both detours will continue in place.

Lady Chucks look for bounce-back season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — To say the Punxsutawney Area High School girls' soccer team wants to have a better year is an understatement.

New Head Coach Bridget Rheaume is looking to lead her young Lady Chucks team to a better record, but honing the skills is the most important part of that.

"I want to improve their skills," Rheaume said. "Hopefully, we can end up having more wins because of that."

Through three days of practice, Rheaume said that Emily and Anna Horner, Claire Smith and Courtney Huffman are among the many players that caught her eye early on.
