In recognition of Labor Day, the Spirit offices will be closed Monday, and there will be no newspaper.

Regular office hours will resume at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Punxsy native returning for recital Tuesday

Punxsy native Kirk Ferguson will return for a father-and-son recital that will take place on 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church in Punxsy.

Vroman Empire: Vroman leads Raiders to 25-22 Route 36 win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After months of anticipation and weeks of preparation, it was finally time for some Friday night lights in Jefferson County. To make it more special for the fans of the Punxsutawney Chucks and Brookville Raiders, the much-anticipated Route 36 battle returned Friday night at Brookville High School.

Punxsy came into the game Friday night as the favorite and reigning winner of the classic battle. After losing three of the last four match
ups with the Chucks, the Raiders came in hungry to get back on top of the rivalry they've controlled in recent memory.

BETAS DONATE TO WESTERN PA CARES FOR KIDS

Friday evening, Linda Bittle, secretary of the Punxsutawney Beta Sorority, presented a check for $1,200 to the Western PA Cares for Kids organization.

The sorority held its annual Ethnic Food Fair Fundraiser on July 6, with all proceeds going to Western PA Cares for Kids.

To raise more funds for the charity, the Betas will be raffling off an Amish quilt on Sept. 28, at the Punxsutawney Appreciation Day event.

Police: Girl, 17, struck by car, suffers minor injuries

Punxsutawney Borough Police and the Central Fire Department responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at 3:56 p.m. Friday along West Mahoning Street.

Police said the pedestrian, a 17-year-old female, suffered minor injuries, and the driver will not be charged.

J. Kipp Lukehart, 67

J. Kipp Lukehart, 67, Punxsutawney, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at home.

He was born Dec. 27, 1945, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Joseph M. and Jeanne (Bidwell) Lukehart.

On Aug. 27, 1966, he married Sharyn M. “Shug” McLaughlin, who survives.

He was a member of the Weber Club, Corn Cob Club, the Punxsutawney Country Club and the Jefferson County BAR Association. He was also a former district attorney for Jefferson County.

Quay States, 90

August 30, 2013

Quay E. States, 90, of Berlin Center, Ohio, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Humility House Nursing Home in Austintown, Ohio.

Mr. States was born July 6, 1923, in Juneau, a son of the late Albert and Violet (Gaston) States.

He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" States.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Carol Champion of Chandler,
Ariz., and Donna Cook of N. Jackson, Ohio; two brothers, Jack

ROUTE 119 BRIDGE OPEN FOR TRAVEL

As PennDOT promised, the bridge carrying Route 119 over Elk Run in the Punxsutawney Borough opened Thursday evening.

While the road is now open, motorists are asked to use caution and be alert for flaggers, as paving is still underway on the roadway improvement project.

MAHONING STREET WRECK

August 29, 2013

A three-vehicle accident occurred at the corner of Virginia Avenue and East Mahoning Street on Thursday afternoon.

Punxsy Borough Police said that a four-door Cadillac was stopped and waiting to turn onto Virginia Avenue, with another vehicle stopped behind.

The accident occurred when a 17-year-old juvenile — who police say was distracted and didn't notice that the cars were stopped — hit the the vehicle in front of him, which led that vehicle to hit the Cadillac.

The 17-year-old juvenile suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene.
