JOC commends Gooden for his solid performance at national criminal justice competition

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — The Jeff Tech Operating Committee (JOC), at its most recent meeting, congratulated one of its Criminal Justice students who
competed in the district competition for criminal justice students.

Jamie Rhed, a Jeff Tech advisor, said that Justin Gooden, a Jeff Tech sophomore, attended the national competition and did very well as the lone local student in the national criminal justice competition.

Gooden thanked the administration and JOC for allowing him to attend.

"It was the opportunity of a lifetime," Gooden said.

Pasquale's Deli offering reward for break-in information

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Pasquale's Deli is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in a burglary that occurred at the deli at 11:20 p.m. last Tuesday, according to PSP-Punxsy.

Police said unknown actor(s) removed various items from the deli, which is located along Route 119 in Young Township.

The investigation continues.

Girls' volleyball wins first home match

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Fresh off its opening tournament, the Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney Area High School opened up their regular season at home against Ridgway on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Chucks played a tough Knoch opponent Saturday, but like one of their warmup songs said, it was "On to the next one."
Unfortunately for Ridgway, they were the next ones.

Punxsy took the match in three straight games (25-18, 25-21, 25-8) to start the regular season 1-0.

Robert Wayne Dinger, 68

Robert Wayne Dinger, 68, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Punxsutawney, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 31, 2013, in Sarasota, following a lengthy illness.

Wayne, as he was known to all, was born in Punxsutawney on March 28, 1945, the son of Ervin and Mary Dinger.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Toale Brothers Funeral Home of Sarasota.

A full military burial will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, 2013, at Sarasota National Cemetery, located at 9810 State Highway 72, Sarasota, Fla.

Keith "Kip" Duane Snyder, Sr., 86

September 2, 2013

Keith "Kip" Duane Snyder, Sr., 86, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at Shadyside Hospital, with his family by his side.

Keith was born Jan. 6, 1927, in Timblin, a son of the late Elvin Sidney and Agnes Mae (Engle) Snyder.

He was a graduate of the class of 1943 at Punxsutawney High School.

He then attended California State Teachers’ College until his commencement in 1947.

Mr. Snyder served in the United States Navy during World War II.

On Dec. 26, 1949, he married Lois Romayne Martz. She preceded him in death on Nov. 10, 1974.

Danis Sheryl "Sherry" Rager, 61

Danis Sheryl "Sherry" Rager, 61, of Rossiter, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.

Sherry was born on Sept, 20, 1951, in Niagra Falls, New York, a daughter of the late Thomas Edward Beck, Sr. and DeMaris Loretta (Cessna) Beck.

On July 21, 2007, she married George R. Rager. He survives.

She enjoyed dancing, baking, needlework and being with friends.

Genevieve R. Haverilla, 90

Genevieve R. Haverilla, 90, Rossiter, died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was born July 15, 1923, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Angelo and Daily (Coretti) Ferrara.

On Sept. 21, 1946, she married Henry J. Haverilla, who preceded her in death on Sept. 25, 1988.

She was a study hall monitor at Punxsutawney High School from 1963 to 1971; she then founded the Haverilla Personal Care Home, where she continued to work until this past week.

She was a member of the Church of the Resurrection in Rossiter.

Robert “Bob” Jay Melzer, Jr., 74

Robert “Bob” Jay Melzer, Jr. was escorted into Heaven by angels on Aug. 30, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was 74 years old.

He was born in the Wayne Hotel, Desire, Pa., on Sept, 17, 1938, to Robert “Jay” Melzer and Josephine (Jackson) Melzer.

In 1959, Bob married his best friend and the love of his life, Nancy (Keenan) Melzer, in Sykesville, Pa., and they built a home and started a family in Desire, Pa.

They welcomed 4 children — Bobbi, Elizabeth, Susan and Doug.

Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87

Phyllis Theresa Himes, 87, of Punxsutawney, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Mulberry Square, where she had been a resident for the past four years.

She was surrounded by family and friends.

Phyllis was born June 4, 1926, in DeLancey, Pa.

She was the daughter of the late Cataldo and Theresa D. (Garvey) Scarantine.

Her father immigrated from Italy in 1899.

On Nov. 10, 1945, she married Reed M. Himes, who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2001.

SUMMERVILLE’S LABOR DAY PARADE

The Summerville Public Library and the fire department held a Labor Day festival on Monday.

Events included a parade (pictured above), as well as a 5K walk/run, a car show, chicken BBQ, cornhole tournament, hot dog eating contest, Duck Derby and much more.
