February 10, 1897
Furnishing Liquor to Minors
John Steahle, of Harmony, had Scott George, resident of the same place and teacher of the White school in Young township, arrested for furnishing liquor to minors.
Joann Virginia Kunkle Jeffries, 70, of Home, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Indiana Regional Medical Center.
A daughter of Lyle W. and Virginia Bracken Kunkle, she was born Dec. 17, 1942, in Indiana.
Mrs. Jeffries was a graduate of Marion Center High School.
Joann was a caregiver and also a van driver for Indian Haven.
She was an animal lover and enjoyed gardening, yard work and all outdoor activities.
Joann was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Melvin Shepler, 83, of Industry, Pa., passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2013, with his family at his side.
He was born Oct. 16, 1929, in Henderson Township, Pa., a son of Homer and Leila Pearl Shepler.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during the Korean War in the Atlantic Fleet aboard the USS New Kent PA-217.
He was an electrician with Pittsburgh Tube Mill for 32 years and was a member of Fairview Reformed Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and youth leader.
He was also a Little League coach and Boy Scout leader.
Wilbur Bair, 85, of Rossiter, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.

CLARION — The night session and the opening edition of the District IX/IV AAA wrestling championships started Friday, and the foes of the Chucks started to fall one after another.
Punxsy posted a strong first night of action in the district championships held at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.
The Chucks claimed three falls in their opening three bouts and two major decisions in the next two before adding a fourth pin to begin 6-0.
Punxsy finished the preliminary and round I consolations at 7-6 and had only one wrestler not alive for the second day.
The staff of the Punxsutawney Spirit/Jefferson County Neighbors recently completed a community profile and membership directory for the Brookville Area Chamber of Commerce.
Copies were turned over to the chamber on Thursday, along with a donation of $1,000 of the proceeds from their production.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you're interested in school safety, then you'll want to attend a community forum dealing with that topic to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Punxsutawney Area High School Auditorium.
The meeting is a combined effort between the Punxsutawney Area School Board and Punxsutawney Borough Council.
"Following the tragedy that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, we received numerous phone calls from concerned citizens and parents regarding the district's safety plan," said Dr. Keith Wolfe, Punxsutawney Area School District superintendent.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ever been “in a pickle”? Felt like “a laughing stock”? Looked like a “sorry sight”?
If you have ever had occasion to use those words — or worse yet, have had someone use them about you — you may not realize you have been involved with the wit and wisdom of William Shakespeare, who is credited with being the man who added those words to the English language.
At Thursday night's Rails to Trails meeting, a $2,000 donation was made by Denny Fetterman, secretary of the Eagles, to the members of the Rails to Trails Association.
This donation is the kick-off for the Capital Campaign Fund Drive for trail maintenance. Accepting the check were (from left): Susan Wolfe, secretary; Matt Taladay, president; Bob Anibaldi, committee member; Tony Bofinger, treasurer; and Nick Gianvito, vice president; and representing the Eagles were Fetterman and Lisa Haught, club manager.

ST. MARYS — The real Punxsy Lady Chucks basketball team showed for the final five minutes of action on Thursday night.
The arrival of the Punxsy squad, which helped claim 13 wins heading into the District IX semifinal turned out to be just in the nick of time.
Trailing the entire first 27 minutes, the Lady Chucks went on an 11-3 run to take the lead and held on for an eventual 50-47 victory over the host Lady Dutch of St. Marys.
