Chucks double number as Young and Bowers head to states

March 4, 2013

ALTOONA — After making the trip by himself last season as the lone state qualifier, Punxsy wrestler Joel Bowers will have some company for next week’s trip across the state.

In his first season, the Chucks’ Kaleb Young not only became a state qualifier but also won the 126-pound weight class of the AAA Northwest Regional in Altoona Saturday night.

Bowers (120) matched his regional finish from a year ago when he secured a consolation final pin.

Guard pair propels Lady Owls to D-IX title over Lady Chucks

March 4, 2013

CLARION — There are usually many reasons why a team loses only two games in an entire season.

On Saturday, two of the biggest reasons were guards Keserra Owens and Ali Rinfrette, who propelled the Bradford Lady Owls to their second District IX AAA girls’ basketball title in a row with a 56-31 final score over the Punxsy Lady Chucks.

“Bradford’s two guards — Owens and Rinfrette — were the key today,” said Punxsy head coach Randy Reitz. “They played very well. Bradford is a solid basketball team.”

Chucks' tough fourth frame gives Owls D-IX title

CLARION — If you have never felt something slip through your fingers, the Punxsy Chucks boys’ basketball team can tell you how it feels.

With control of the game throughout, Punxsy had the worst time to lose its mojo in the fourth quarter of the District IX title game and gave the championship to Bradford, 49-42, on Saturday at Clarion University.

Aiming to Buy: As talk of gun control increases, so do sales

March 4, 2013

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Ready, aim, buy.

Due to the fear of guns being banned that has been stirred recently, many people are purchasing guns and ammunition at a rapid rate at area gun stores, according to those shop owners.

The owners have said that many of their customers are fearful of potential gun control legislation and a possible ban on both guns and ammunition.

Todd Peace, co-owner of Peace's Feed, Guns & Ammo at 300 East Main St. in Big Run, said much of his stock of handgun ammo, .223-calibur ammo and AK rifle rounds is selling out faster than he can order more in.
