SYKESVILLE — One of Jefferson County's first weekends of sunny and temperate spring weather arrived just in time for the 34th Annual Run/Walk for Someone Special event in Sykesville, which raises money each year for The Arc of Clearfield and Jefferson Counties' Camp Friendship program.
This year’s total was $63,400, including money from a Saturday night Zumbathon and Sunday food sales, raffles, donations and sponser money turned in.

Earlier, at 12:48 p.m., Central and Elk Run, with assistance from McCalmont Township Volunteer Fire Company, extinguished a brush fire near the Anita Community Cemetery located in Young Township.

A Day in School
Instead of two hundred there should have been five hundred visitors to the public schools last Friday.
Angelo R. Strano, Jr., 93, Punxsutawney, died Saturday, April 6, 2013, at Mulberry Square.
He was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Angelo Strano, Sr., and Josephine (Polito) Strano.
On Aug. 7, 1943, he married Sophia (Moskowski) Strano, who survives.
He passed away on her 90th birthday.
He was a member of Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church of Punxsutawney.
He was a member of the Walston Club, Eagles, Elks, VFW and the American Legion.

Punxsutawney — This past month saw Punxsy’s very own beloved groundhog, Phil, in the spotlight once again. With the harsh winter
dragging on, poor Phil became the target of a frustrated fan.
Though he had a suit tossed at him, he managed to make it through without any charges being pressed — with a little help from one of his closest friends, Bill Deeley, president of the Groundhog Club.
That time in the spotlight has garnered Phil a great deal of attention, and now he has a song and music video dedicated in his honor.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Police continue to search for the suspect in an assault that occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m Thursday along North Jefferson Street in Punxsutawney.
Police are searching for a white male, between the age of 20 and 30, approximately 5 feet 9 inches tall, who was wearing a black leather jacket and blue jeans and possibly operating, or a passenger inside of, a gray vehicle with an unknown registration, said Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan.
BELL TOWNSHIP — Windy and dry conditions have prompted a red flag warning for brush fires across the Jefferson County Area.
The National Weather Service says gusty winds, along with humidity levels as low as 20 percent, mean there is a "great potential" for wildfires in the area throughout the day, along with the possibility that any blazes that do start could easily spread.
BIG RUN — First-year frogcaster Jeff London has reported that the tiny peeper frogs began to sing in the Big Run Swamp at 2:10 p.m. on Friday.
London said that was their first look through the ice, and they have two
more to go before spring settles in for good.
London had predicted earlier in the week that it wasn't going to occur until Friday or today.
Up until this year, April 2 was the latest the tiny frogs had peeped, but now, the new longest record is established
as April 5.
Mary Magdelen Felix, 81, Stump Creek, died suddenly on Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at DRMC.
She was born Dec. 16, 1931, in Adrian, a daughter of Patsy and Ruby (Sabarich) Bevak.
She married Edward F. Felix, Sr. on June 3, 1951, at St. Adrian Church in DeLancey.
Mary was a graduate of St. Adrian Catholic School.
She worked at BF Goodrich, Rola Jensen in Punxy and Paris Cleaners in DuBois, from where she retired.
She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Sykesville.
Melvin Mitchell, 79, of Brookville, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
Mel was born on Oct. 5, 1933, in Punxsutawney, the son of late Mae (Amundson) and Melvin S. Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Mary (Pattison) Mitchell; his parents; and his brother, Hans Eugene “Fritz” Mitchell.
A 1951 graduate of Punxsutawney High School, Mel began his career as an educator at Reynoldsville High School, Punxsutawney High School and Tyrone High School.
