Ramona J. "Sis" Strange, 85

December 22, 2013

Ramona J. "Sis" Strange, 85, of Punxsutawney, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at home.

She was born Aug. 15, 1928, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Raymond Melborn and Florence Ella (Wells) Shick.

In 1964, she married the love of her life, Jack D. Strange, "JD Strange" as he was known by many.

They loved to dance with one another, enjoyed training horses and raising Banty chickens for show and won every ribbon possible.

He preceded her in death on April 7, 1999.

She had a love of animals and enjoyed caring for stray cats and feeding the birds.

Charles Theodore Kuchar, 60

Charles Theodore Kuchar, 60, of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Wellington Heights in Punxsutawney.

He was born May 14, 1953, in Kittanning, Pa., the son of the late Charles and Margaret (Lenzi) Kuchar.

He was a logger in the timber industry.

He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Diane Neville of Punxsutawney.

Doris Ann Gearhart, 78

Doris Ann Gearhart, 78, of Mahaffey, passed away suddenly after a brief illness, on Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mrs. Gearhart was born June 20, 1935, in Stranach, the daughter of the late Cecil and Ruth (Rafferty) Witherite.

She was married to Gerald "Red" Gearhart of Mahaffey. He survives.

Doris attended the CMA Church in Mahaffey.

She was the cookie and ladybug lady at Kuntz Motors.

Ruth I. Bussard, 85

Ruth I. Bussard, 85, of Dayton, Pa., passed away Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013, at her home.

She was born Oct. 27, 1928, in Smicksburg, Pa., the daughter of Virgil C. and Ruth Isabell (McClelland) Stiteler, and was lovingly raised by her grandparents, Charles and Minnie (Wells) Stiteler.

Ruth was a resident of the Dayton area most of her life. She was a member of the Dayton United Methodist Church and was an active member of the United Methodist Women of DUMC.

BIG RUN — For many, the Christmas season is a time of giving and receiving presents, but some feel as if the real meaning of Christmas is sometimes forgotten.

The total for the 2013 Make-A-Wish Light Up a Child's Life Campaign came in at over $86,000, with more donations coming in, as the organization wrapped up its broadcast live from Miller Brothers Furniture in Punxsutawney on Friday afternoon.

Virginia June Wells, 78

Virginia June Wells, 78, of Hilliard, Fla., formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, in Hilliard.

Mrs. Wells was born July 31, 1935, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Raymond Sidney Manners and Violet (Burkett) Pyles.

She was married to James Dale Wells of Hilliard. He survives.

She was a member of the Gateway to Life Church of Hilliard.

Crews respond to late-night fire on Cloe-Rossiter Road

December 20, 2013

Members of the Punxsutawney Fire Department responded to a scanner call for a working structure fire along Cloe-Rossiter Road shortly before 9 p.m. on Thursday night.

No flames were showing when crews first arrived.

No further details were available at Spirit press time.

When it comes to children riding in cars, safety always comes first.
