Chucks bounce Bison to get back in win column

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After two frustrating contests, Punxsy was able to take a second-inning lead and allow only two hits over the final frames on Tuesday afternoon.

Trailing 3-0, the Chucks plated six runs in the home second inning and added two more scores in the fourth to bounce the Clearfield Bison, 8-3.

“I like how we answered back when Clearfield took a 3-0 lead,” noted Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey. “We had just enough from our bats to win.”

Punxsy (3-2) recorded eight hits in the seven-inning contest, but did hold Clearfield to just four hits.

Crews battle two-alarm Crawfordtown Road fire in middle of thunderstorm

CRAWFORDTOWN — A quickly spreading structure fire caused heavy damage to a house located at 44 Crawfordtown Rd. in Crawford-town, Young Township, on Wednesday evening.

Elk Run, Central and Lindsey were called to the blaze at 8:40 p.m., with McCalmont Township Fire Company first on scene and reporting that the structure was fully involved with the orange flames showing bright in the night sky. Firefighters were able to knock the blaze down within a few minutes.

Curtain opens on 2013 PAHS Variety Show tonight!

After weeks and weeks of practice and hard work by numerous actors and
committees, tonight is the night ­— Opening Night for the 2013 PAHS Variety Show. The show will feature 19 performances over two acts, with an intermission to allow attendees an opportunity to purchase some of the ever-famous fudge. The show starts at 7 p.m. tonight and will continue on Friday and Saturday. Tickets are available at the door for $5. Demolition of dilapidated McCalmont Township structure set to begin soon

The Jefferson County Commissioners and members of the McCalmont Township Supervisors gathered Wednesday to commemorate the demolition of a dilapidated structure on Main Street in Anita.

Matson D. Blose, Jr., 87

April 10, 2013

Matson D. Blose, Jr., 87, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at home.

He was born Dec. 4, 1925, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Matson D. Blose, Sr. and Carrie (Lewis) Blose.

On March 23, 1945, he married Anna Lou Wolfe, who survives.

They had just celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of SS.C.D.

He was a sergeant in the Air Force and served during World War II.

He was the owner of M. Blose and Sons Scrap Yard in Walston, Pa.

Helen G. Brickell, 92

Helen G. Brickell, 92, of Smithport, Pa., died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.

The daughter of George Ray and Lillian (Williams) Brickell, she was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in Banks Twp., Indiana County.

Helen was a lifelong member of the Wilgus Wesleyan Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and church treasurer.

For 30 years, she was employed as a seamstress at Sportswear in Punxsu-
tawney, prior to her retirement in 1984.

Acting out: PAHS Seniors in full swing with Variety Show dress rehearsals under way

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Are you ready for some fudge?

Yup, it's that time again — time for the annual PAHS Variety Show to be held at 7 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday at the high school auditorium, with a portion of the proceeds to go toward the Margaret C. Boles Foundation.

Austin Sabatucci, assistant executive director, said the theme this year is "It's Our Time."

"We have a lot of diverse skits this year; they're very original, especially after talking to the advisors," Sabatucci said, adding that the show will be very funny and will appeal to a broad audience this year.

Dr. Alveda King speaks about civil rights and abortion at Clarion University

CLARION — Clarion University's Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series — "Realities of Race" — continued on Monday with a presentation of "The True Meaning of the Dream" by Dr. Alveda King.

The series, according to Clarion University's website, "was established to provide the Clarion University community with cultural experiences that inspire learning through thoughtful discussions."

And King knows a thing or two about cultural experiences, being the niece of famous civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Police: Bullet breaks window of Rose Township business

ROSE TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, police said, actor(s) discharged a pistol from the Allegheny Boulevard area of the Brookville Borough.

The bullet ricocheted, broke a window and damaged the window screen at EarthWorx, located along Route 36.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 938-0510.

Arthur “Dutch” Kline, Jr., 82

Arthur “Dutch” Kline, Jr., 82, of Knox Dale, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at Brookside Manor.

He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Yatesboro, a son of the late Arthur and Minnie (Allenbaugh) Kline, Sr.

He was a graduate of Reynoldsville High School.

Dutch worked at Jackson China in the Quality Control department for 30 years.

He also had worked at Reynoldsville Casket Company for seven years.

He was a simple man that loved summertime and enjoyed walking in the outdoors with his dog, Tonya.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Geraldine Vanwhy of Punxsutawney;
