Get Ready, get set, detour!

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you enjoy a challenge when you drive, you might be looking forward to the detours that are coming, as two bridges will be replaced in Punxsutawney Borough this coming summer.

Those two bridges are the Saw Mill Run Bridge and the Route 119 Bridge and Route 310 Intersection improvement project in Elk Run.

Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager said at Monday’s Punxsutawney Borough Council meeting that he is waiting for information from the contractor, Palo Construction Inc., to make some changes to the sanitary sewer line and manhole as requested by them.

Mark Jerome Adams, 88

January 14, 2013

Mark Jerome Adams, 88, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at Hospice & Community Care, Mt. Joy.

He was born Friday, April 4, 1924, in Orwin, Pa., a son of the late Edwin and Emma Jane (Bendigo) Adams.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Betty F. (Hainly) Adams.

Mark proudly served his country as a United States Marine in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was employed by Farm Bureau and Agway for 36 years.

William C. Bowser, 92

January 14, 2013

William C. Bowser, 92, of Rossiter, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Bowser was born June 29, 1920, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Lawrence Bowser and Margaret (Brown) Bowser.

Oct. 26, 1946, he married his wife, Velma E. (Neal) Bowser, who survives, of Rossiter.

Mr. Bowser was a proud U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II with the 101st Airborne, Screaming Eagles, as a paratrooper.

He participated in D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge and was wounded at
Bastogne.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Police: Brookville woman, 19, missing since Friday

BROOKVILLE — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the case of a 19-year-old Brookville woman who has been missing since Friday.

Police reported that Devan Cathlene Knapp purchased a new, white 2013 Toyota Scion on Jan. 11, and told her mother at 6 p.m. that she was going to show her the new car.

However, police said Knapp has not been seen or heard from since.

Knapp is described as approximately 5'02" and 120 pounds, with red hair and blue eyes.

She was last seen wearing a blue, long-sleeve shirt, black leggings and black, Ugg-style boots.

PAH implements visitor restrictions due to flu

PUNXSUTAWNEY — In response to the widespread outbreak and severity of this year’s seasonal flu, Punxsutawney Area Hospital (PAH) has implemented restrictions on visitors to all clinical areas of the hospital, effective immediately.

“We are asking that visitors be free of a fever for at least 24 hours prior to visiting a patient, and that visitors who have respiratory issues or who are under the age of 18 not come to the hospital at all,” said PAH Infection Preventionist and Specialist Abby Kengersky. “If you are visiting, we ask that you wash your hands frequently and

Chucks get in ‘Geer’ to clip Cardinals

PUNXSUTAWNEY – It may have taken 28 minutes but the Chucks were able to get its direction and get in ‘Geer’ to clip the Cardinals on Saturday night.

With only a hard-fought two-point lead, 54-52, Punxsy rode the wave of all-out effort by Cory Geer to spearhead the winning final four minute stretch drive over DuBois Central Catholic 62-52, in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy 4th-grade girls win HC tourney in impressive fashion

These Punxsy 4th-grade girls dominated Homer Center 23-2 in the
Championship game of the Homer City tournament held on Jan. 5 and 6.

The young Lady Chucks bested United and Saltsburg to face Homer Center in the title game. There were a total of six teams in the tourney. After claiming the title, the girls got together to pose with the championship trophy.

Police investigating Saturday burglary at Ragley’s True Value

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At approximately 6:20 a.m. Saturday, an unknown white male entered Ragley’s True Value Hardware Store, located at 248 N. Findley St.,
through a window, according to Punxsutawney Borough Police.

Police said the male is seen on Ragley’s surveillance video as he is going through the store.

A store employee who was coming to work witnessed the male exiting the store through a broken window in the rear of the building, according to police.

Future of local tax collectors up for school board discussion

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Your friendly neighborhood tax collector may be going out of business, if the Punxsutawney Area School Board decides to change the manner in which tax collectors are compensated.

"We're going to discuss the tax collection commission analysis, which is something that can only be adjusted every four years," Susan H. Robertson, Punxsutawney Area School District business manager, said at last Tuesday's school board meeting.

Robertson said it has to be done in an election year for the tax collectors.
