PUNXSUTAWNEY — After a crowd-roaring three-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, Punxsy could not ride the wave of momentum to victory on Friday night.
Rival DuBois proved to be too strong for Punxsy by scoring the game’s final 11 points over the last 2:51 to take away a 50-40 boys’ basketball victory in Punxsutawney.
“It was the same old record,” explained Chucks head coach Dirk Neal. “We had too many missed easy baskets and putbacks. We can’t finish.”
The inability to finish was never more evident then during one stretch in the final period.
It was a night fit for royalty Friday, as the PAHS Winter Queen and Princess were crowned at halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game.
After a ceremony at the beginning of halftime, Maija Carol (left, with escort Caesar Maruca) was named queen, with Lauren Kachmar (right, with escort Devan Snyder) being crowned princess.
BIG RUN — Only minor injuries were reported when a school bus carrying students from the Punxsutawney Area School District crashed into the front porch of a house at 3:05 p.m. Friday, at 226 West Main St. in Big Run Borough.
For the full story, including comments from the home's owner, as well as PASD Superintendent Dr. Keith Wolfe, pick up Saturday's print edition of The Punxsutawney Spirit.

A school bus traveling on Route 119 Friday afternoon hit a home in Big Run. Route 119 was closed at Sheetz in Elk Run as a result. Check back for more details as they become available.
State Route (SR) 119 is closed in both directions in Big Run Borough in Jefferson County between Watts Street and Thompson Street due to an accident.
The road is expected to open later today. Traffic is being detoured using local roads.
DuBOIS — On night when the action on the court was not very pretty, Punxsy proved to have just enough in the tank over the final two minutes.
With less than eight seconds left, the Lady Chucks’ Taylor Newcome found herself all alone under the basket and received the Jensen Constantino pass for what would be the game-winning layup, 32-30, over the Lady Beavers.
The Newcome bucket made for the final points of the game and completed Punxsy’s 5-0 scoring run in the final 127 seconds of the affair.
ST. MARYS — It is not always how you start, but rather how you finish.
This was the case on Wednesday night on the wrestling mat in St. Marys.
Punxsy was able to rush out to a 24-0 lead behind the heart of its order in the lightweights.
But the tide turned as the heavier wrestlers took their turn for the action. St. Marys scored bonus points in seven straight bouts and won eight straight upperweights in a 43-30 home victory over Punxsy.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — As Punxsy Phil has given us a forecast of a shorter winter, it's already time to start thinking about road construction season in Punxsutawney, and this is the summer when both the Route 119 Bridge on Ridge Avenue in Elk Run and the Saw Mill Run Bridge on West Mahoning Street are set to be replaced.
Now, there's news that the Margiotti Bridge will need to be replaced.
