Competition, warm hearts lead to a big number in annual PAMS food drive

Robert V. Stiteler, 86

November 22, 2013

Robert V. Stiteler, 86, of Smicksburg, passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Stiteler was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Smicksburg, a son of the late Virgil Stiteler and Ruth Ann (McClelland) Stiteler.

He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Stiteler was a brakeman for the B&O Railroad before retirement.

He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Smicksburg and a member of the Dayton American Legion. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and family, gardening, hunting and fishing.

Betty L. Meyer Good, 88

Betty L. Meyer Good, 88, formerly of Smicksburg, went to be with her Lord Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the Communities of Indiana Haven, Indiana.

She was born July 30, 1925, in Indiana County, to Willis W. and Esther S. (Davis) Frederick.

Betty was a lifetime resident of the area and graduated from Punxsutawney High School in 1942.

She was an active member of the Smicksburg United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for 24 years and belonged to the United Methodist Women’s organization, where she also served as president.

SS.C.D. preparing for Christmas Bazaar

November 22, 2013

SS.C.D. will hold its annual Christmas Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.

One hundred vendors will be set up and selling a variety of Christmas items.

Homemade sandwiches, vegetable soup and fresh-baked pies will also be available.

A nativity donated by Pam and Pat Defelice — in memory of their daughter, the late Brielle Nicole Defelice — will be raffled off.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Mary Mack is a recognizable face. You may recognize her as a former teacher in the Punxsutawney Area School District, or perhaps you have seen her participating in events throughout the community.

Harold P. Rhoades, 85

November 22, 2013

Harold P. Rhoades, 85, slept away peacefully surrounded by his family, Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at DRMC.

Harold was born on Aug. 29, 1928, in Gaskill Township, the son of Frank G. and Florence V. (Pifer) Rhoades. He married Helen E. Renwick on Nov. 24, 1960. The couple would have celebrated 53 years of marriage.

Harold was a fourth-generation dairy farmer, who spent his life operating a century farm in Gaskill Township with his wife and son, Bill.

Harold was a 40-year cancer survivor. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Matt and Shannie, and his pets.

Write-in votes tallied, Scarantine edges Conrad for school board seat

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The election results for the super-tight Punxsutawney Area School Region III (McCalmont & Young Townships) school board director race were certified by the Jefferson County Board of Elections on Wednesday, with challenger Jim Scarantine defeating incumbent Punxsutawney Area School Board President Gary Conrad.

Big Run residents say dredging is a necessity

BIG RUN — A group of Big Run residents spoke at Monday's Big Run Borough Council meeting and complained of the island in the stream, which allegedly has grown due to a lack of dredging in the creek over the years and has led to flooding in the lower end of the borough any time a major rain storm occurs.

Father Robert J. Yetsko, T.O.R., 57

Father Robert J. Yetsko, T.O.R., 57, of the Third Order Regular Franciscans of the Province of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, died suddenly on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, in an automobile accident in LaJose, Pa.

He was born on July 2, 1956, in Altoona and given the name Kevin.

He is the son of Doris J. Gates and the late Robert J. Yetsko. He was a graduate of McNelis Catholic Grade School, Altoona, and Bishop Guilfoyle High School, Altoona.

After high school graduation, Father Robert entered the Third Order Regular on Aug. 24, 1974.

Dorothy E. Mohney, 92

Dorothy E. Mohney, 92, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mrs. Mohney was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Falls Creek, a daughter of the late Leroy J. and Ida R. (Zeitler) Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Blake I. Mohney.

Dorothy was a faithful member of the Scotland Avenue Church of God.

Before retirement, Dorothy was an X-ray technician for many years at the Punxsutawney Area Hospital and Brookville Hospital.
