Cleanup continues after diesel spill

Tuesday, workers continued to clean up property along Route 119 in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County, following a diesel spill on Monday.

BENEFIT TO HELP RHOADES’ CANCER BATTLE

A benefit event for Donna J. Rhoades will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday at the Punxsy Eagles Club.

Rhoades, who was a former Groundhog Festival Committee member and former owner of Winslow Pizza, began battling uterine/ovarian cancer back in 2010.

After a long series of treatments and PET scans were completed, Rhoades was thought to be cancer-free.

Months later, another PET scan was conducted, and Rhoades was diagnosed with a cancerous lymph node in her abdomen.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Rhoades’ medical and travel expenses.

Leroy Dallas Bloom, 71

Leroy Dallas Bloom, 71, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Bloom was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ralph and Effie (McHenry) Bloom.

Leroy was a retired farmer and truck driver and was the owner of Bloom Trucking.

He enjoyed going to antique tractor pulls with his friends.

James L. Sherry, 77

James L. Sherry, 77, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville.

Mr. Sherry was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Juneau, a son of the late Harry E. and Hazel (McDowell) Sherry.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was married to Barbara Ann (Tyger) Sherry, who survives, of Juneau.

He was a member of Valley Chapel Church.

Mr. Sherry worked 43 years for B & P Railroad before retiring.

He was a member of the FCRV Family Campers and Hikers and the John W. Jenks Lodge No. 534 in Punxsutawney.

Jefferson County Geriatric Interest Network bands together to help raise awareness of elder abuse

Monday night, the Jefferson County Geriatric Interest Network conducted a Community Education Night at The Foundry in Reynoldsville for the elderly members of the community.

The purpose of the event was to provide education about elder abuse and ways to prevent it.

The main speaker at the event was Jodi Reitz, protective services supervisor, Jefferson County Area Agency on Aging. Reitz informed those in attendance about the different forms of elder abuse and what her organization does to help those being abused.

Fluffy Feathers Fashion Show skit held at Mahoning Hills Center

The Mahoning Hills Players recently had a great time getting together once again for a skit.

Skits first started at the center under the direction of
friend and center participant Betty Spencer.

Spencer has moved away from this area, but the skits have become an ongoing tradition every chance there is to perform.

The actors had a great time, as did the audience that attended.

James L. "Muggs" Shaffer Jr., 55

March 25, 2013

James L. "Muggs" Shaffer Jr., 55, Brookville, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born June 2, 1957, in Brookville, a son of the late James Lee Shaffer Sr. and Lois Lucille Wolfe Shaffer.

He worked as an assemblyman for Beverage Air in Brookville. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Deb Campbell of Brookville; a brother, Kevin M. Shaffer (Diane) of Punxsutawney; and two nieces, Jenna Roach and Katelynn Shaffer.

Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2013, at
McKinney Funeral Home, Brookville.

RUN/WALK FOR SOMEONE SPECIAL RETURNING FOR 34th YEAR

SYKESVILLE — Now in its 34th year, the annual Run/Walk for Someone Special is still going strong, and this year, it will take place on April 7 in Sykesville at the Town Hall.

Registration and activities will begin at 1:30 p.m. with the big event — the race — to start at 3 p.m.

The event has a long history in Western Pennsylvania. Pat Mowrey, one of the event organizers, said it began about 35 years ago, when his father was on a board in Jefferson County that worked with the mentally disabled.
