PACC needs to raise funds to keep Jackson Theater current in digital age

Take a close look at the projection booth of the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC) Jackson Theater.

The 35 mm projector and equipment needs to be replaced with a digital projector as the movie industry goes all digital within the next year.

1963 undefeated Chucks set to be honored at tonight's home opener

PUNXSUTAWNEY — I would say to close your eyes for a second and imagine someone that you've always looked up to being in your presence, watching you work. But if I did that, you wouldn't be able to read The Spirit.

So let's imagine with our eyes open and our attention still on the article, shall we?

Now that you have the person or group in your head, can you imagine the butterflies that would be running through you as they watch you do what they did?

Personally, if Rick Reilly was here at 510 Pine St. and pulled up a chair beside me, I would get carpal tunnel immediately.

Breaking News: Pantall sheriff's sale postponed

The sheriff's sale of the Pantall Hotel, which had been scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in the sheriff's office, located in the Jefferson County Courthouse, has been postponed.

Jefferson County Sheriff Carl Gotwald Sr. said negotiations with the bank are ongoing.

The sale has been rescheduled for 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.

Richard A. Srock, Jr., 63

September 4, 2013

Richard A. Srock, Jr., 63, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Kindred Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Richard was preceded in death by parents Richard, Sr. and Leah Margaret (Knarr) Srock of Troutville.

Born in DuBois on June 9, 1950, Richard grew up in Troutville and graduated from DuBois Area High School in 1968.

Richard lived with his parents until moving to Pittsburgh, where he brought great joy to the homes of his sisters Mary Maddox and Diane Davis until moving to Brick House at the campus of Allegheny Valley School in Coraopolis, Pa. in 2004.

Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94

Alfred J. "Pete" Manners, 94, a resident of Elk Haven Nursing Home and formerly of Benezette, died on Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 28, 1918, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late William and Jessie Manners.

On May 19, 1948, in Punxsutawney, he married Ann Swanson Manners, who survives.

Pete was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII in Normandy and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries received during the war. He retired from Airco Speer after more than 29 years of service. 

Trail workers have Fall 50K course ready to run!

This coming Saturday, the 15th annual Groundhog Fall 50K is coming to town. Big Run’s VFW Post 9044 is hosting the race for the third straight year, and post members have completed 96 man hours of work preparing the trails. Pictured here are Tom Johnston, Bob Lott, Jesse Miller, Duane Miller and Randy Kromer, some of the workers near a new obstacle on the course — a six-foot-deep ditch carved by the flooding in June, which will cause extra challenges to the runners this year. The pipe the water used to flow through can even be seen.

PAHS students receive laptops, open fifth year of One to One program

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Now that everyone is officially back to school throughout the area, the students at Punxsutawney Area High School (PAHS) were given the opportunity to be reunited with their MacBook laptop computers on Wednesday.

The "One to One" computer program is beginning its fifth year at PAHS, said Dave London PAHS principal.

"Since our district received the CFF grant, we moved right into a ‘One to One’ computing program," he said. "I think kids look forward to laptop distribution day more than the first day of school."

JOC commends Gooden for his solid performance at national criminal justice competition

WINSLOW TOWNSHIP — The Jeff Tech Operating Committee (JOC), at its most recent meeting, congratulated one of its Criminal Justice students who
competed in the district competition for criminal justice students.

Jamie Rhed, a Jeff Tech advisor, said that Justin Gooden, a Jeff Tech sophomore, attended the national competition and did very well as the lone local student in the national criminal justice competition.

Gooden thanked the administration and JOC for allowing him to attend.

"It was the opportunity of a lifetime," Gooden said.

Pasquale's Deli offering reward for break-in information

YOUNG TOWNSHIP — Pasquale's Deli is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in a burglary that occurred at the deli at 11:20 p.m. last Tuesday, according to PSP-Punxsy.

Police said unknown actor(s) removed various items from the deli, which is located along Route 119 in Young Township.

The investigation continues.
