MUSIC IN THE PARK TONIGHT!

August 7, 2013

Just a reminder: The 2013 Music in the Park series continues tonight in Barclay Square, featuring Ridin’ Shotgun — a country/rock band. Guests are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Pizza and beverages will be available, and in the case of inclement weather, the concert will move inside to the Punxsutawney Area Community Center.

Rotary Club members take turn as Hot Dog Days helpers

It was another successful day on Wednesday for Hot Dog Days at Fezell's County Market, sponsored by the Punxsutawney Memorial Library board of trustees. Pictured are Wednesday's celebrity workers (from left) Erin Cameron, Michelle Walls, Lisa London and Michele Neal of the Punxsutawney Rotary Club. Hot Dog Days continue today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. with Thursday's celebrity workers being the Punxsy School District administrators.

Dorothy Fox Stewart, 91

Dorothy Fox Stewart, 91, of Rochester Mills, Pa., died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013 at home.

She was born Nov. 17, 1921, in Red Lion, N.J., the daughter of the late Gilbert E. and Mary (Hinchman) Fox.

She was a seamstress employed by Campus Sportswear in Indiana, Pa., and also worked at Hill's Department Store.

District attorney Burkett speaks to area seniors on fraud abuse and prevention

REYNOLDSVILLE — In light of the prevalence of scams and financial abuse, particularly those targeted at senior citizens in the modern world, Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett is traveling to senior centers throughout the local area to speak about identifying, preventing and responding to fraud and other forms of elder abuse.

"People are always looking for opportunities to scam somebody, to swindle them, to do something to victimize them for their own gain," Burkett said at the first of his presentations on Tuesday morning at the Reynoldsville Foundry.

McCoy honored with proclamation

Rob McCoy, director of the Punxsutawney Area Community Center, received a surprise birthday party held in his honor at Gobbler's Knob on Sunday afternoon.

McCoy received a proclamation from Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle, who proclaimed Sunday, Aug. 4, as Rob McCoy Day in Punxsy.

Donna H. Brush, 78

August 6, 2013

Donna H. Brush, 78, of Brookville, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at McKinley Health Center.

She was born Aug. 23, 1934, in Jefferson County, a daughter of the late Willam Harrison "Buff" Harriger and Catherine Prythena (Troutman) Harriger.

On July 16, 1952, she married James Barr Brush. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1999.

Donna was a member of the Brookville Church of God.

She was also a member of the Eastern Star and Laurelbrooke Auxiliary.

Mrs. Brush was a devoted wife, and tenderly cared for her husband after he became ill.

Helen (Beresnyak) Reken, 84

August 6, 2013

Helen (Beresnyak) Reken, 84, of Home, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

She was born on March 11, 1929, to Joseph and Rose (Yasko) Beresnyak in South Mahoning Township.

Helen worked as a homemaker and a telephone operator for Bell of PA in Indiana and Pittsburgh.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

She enjoyed going to Atlantic City and was a wonderful mother and grandmother to her family.

Dorothy F. Stewart, 91

Dorothy F. Stewart, 91, of Rochester Mills, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, at home.

Arrangements are incomplete and under the direction of the Richard L. Fait Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

Monday marked the first day of the Library Hot Dog Days event, as volunteers from Friends of the Library set up shop in front of Fezell's County Market.

Aside from the $2 hot dog meal, a book sale was also held, with all proceeds going to the library.

Pictured here is Al Mains being served a hot dog by volunteers Debbie Kaza and Mary Mack.

The event will continue throughout the week, with volunteers from different local organizations serving each day.

Brake fire spurs fire alarm, none injured

August 5, 2013

This tow truck owned by South Side Service caught fire Monday when the rear brakes overheated and caught the brake drum, and then the tire, on fire.

The fire was extinguished by the Central Fire Department at the former location for C&S Restaurant in Bell Township.

There were no injuries.
