Football's back in Punxsutawney

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After a long summer off, the fall sports programs are getting back into the swing of things, as the 2013-2014 school year is just around the corner. After a three-day conditioning period, as brought into effect by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, the Punxsutawney Chucks hit the field Monday for their first official practice of the season.

Head Coach Alan Nichol, said that the new rules of conditioning changed the approach he took to the first day of practice. Because of the time last week, the Chucks were able to get right into things Monday.

Council implements new code of ethics, approves GPS program on borough manager’s computer

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council voted to implement the code of ethics and have a GPS tracking program for police and public works vehicles installed on Borough Manager Ben White's computer.

Up until now, the GPS tracking program was only available to be
viewed on Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Tom Fedigan's computer.

Eric Story, council member, said under old business, that the GPS discussion regarding allowing the program to be on the manager’s computer, which had been tabled at the July borough council meeting, was supposed be discussed again at Monday's meeting.

Punxsy Phil “says,” ‘Gimme some o’ that sweet Elixir’

Punxsutawney Phil received a dose of the magic elixir that extends his life by seven years at Saturday's Phil Phest, held at Gobbler's Knob.

Phil's current age is 128 years old.

Punxsy native makes his hometown proud, has firetruck dedicated in his honor

FEASTERVILLE, Pa. — When you hear the fire siren go off and you see volunteer firefighters with their blue lights heading toward their respective fire halls, no matter what the time of day or night, do you know the dedication required for this selfless service? One Punxsutawney native does.

Recently, Joe Lanzendorfer, was honored in Feasterville, Pa,. for his 55 years of service in the Feasterville Volunteer Fire Company. A brass plaque in his honor was affixed on the new Ford F-550 utility vehicle that was placed into service recently.
