State, Borough Police respond to alleged aggravated assault

Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police with assistance from Punxsutawney Borough Police, investigated an alleged aggravated assault that occurred at approximately 9 a.m. Saturday at a camper located at 503 Elderberry Hill Rd., Bell Township. According to police, they are investigating a domestic dispute involving a firearm between Peter C. Parente, 50, and a 31-year-old female. Charges have been filed at district court against Parente for aggravated assault, terroristic threats, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person. The investigation is ongoing.

Ruth E. (Kromer) Beck, 86

Ruth E. Beck, 86, Punxsutawney, died on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at home.
She was born July 16, 1927, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Daniel and Isabel (Nicholson) Kromer.

She was married to the late Wayne B. Beck for 63 years and was a lifelong resident of Punxsutawney. He preceded her in death on February 16, 2009.

She loved gardening and being outdoors.

She worked for 19 years in the office of Dr. L.R. McCauley and for 11 years in the office of Dr. George Cherian. She was a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for over 10 years.

Lorraine Mable Eminhizer, 87

Lorraine Mable Eminhizer, 87, of Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at Laurelbrooke Landing in Brookville.

She was born Dec. 21, 1925, in Mill Hall, Pa., the daughter of the late Oran Frederick and Anna (Moore) Bodle.

She was married to John Roland Eminhizer on Oct. 22, 1941, in Mill Hall, Pa.

She was an accountant and worked at several firms, including Barrish Advertising of State College, Pa.

Fred E. Bell Jr., 67

Fred E. Bell Jr., 67, went home to be with the Lord after a four-year battle with cancer.

Born to Fred E. Bell Sr. and Mary Alice Bell on Jan. 10, 1946, he spent most of his childhood in Punxsutawney and Pittsburgh.

He met his wife, Kathy, in Pittsburgh, and they were married Dec. 2, 1973.

In 1978, the couple moved to Mansfield, Ohio, where Fred worked for General Motors for 29 years and retired July 1, 2006.

Fred and Kathy retired to Arizona in 2010.

He was an avid hunter, could fix almost anything, enjoyed helping his friends and never expected anything in return.

Punxsy native conducting research study on local speech, participants needed

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Does your grass need cut or does it need to be cut? Is there a difference? There is, and it's one that a Punxsutawney native and linguist is eager to study.

Derry Moore is so interested in the roots of language and its usage that he is conducting a research project in the local area as he pursues his doctorate in linguistics at the University at Buffalo — SUNY, in Buffalo, N.Y.

He is looking for 40 residents in the Punxsutawney area — including Rossiter, Anita, Big Run, etc. — between the ages of 30 and 55 to participate in his research project (see below for details).

Burkett: PA Supreme Court upholds murder conviction, death penatly for Rega

BROOKVILLE — Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett is pleased to announce that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently upheld, for the second time, the murder conviction and death penalty of Robert Gene Rega for the killing of Christopher Lauth, the former night watchman at the Gateway Lodge.

Burkett tried and convicted Rega in June of 2002 for the slaying of Lauth, as well as for robbery and other crimes.

After a sentencing hearing, the jury held that Rega’s crimes warranted death.

Rega then began a lengthy appeal process.

TWO-VEHICLE WRECK IN BIG RUN

A two-vehicle accident occurred at approximately 12:05 p.m. Friday on Route 119 in Big Run, when a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck driven by Lorie A. Lennox, 43, of Big Run, was stopped in the northbound travel lane on Route 119 with an activated left turn signal, waiting to make a turn onto Smyers Street, and it was struck from behind by a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Cammy M. Wardell, 36, of Big Run, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police said both vehicles were removed from the travel lanes onto Smyers Street.

Local runners ready to ‘Race to the Face’
