Borough employees given hands-on training on defensive driving through grant

PUNXSUTAWNEY — They say in sports that good defense will stop good offense every time, and the same can be said for driving, too.
That's why Punxsutawney Borough held a defensive driving course on Wednesday in the parking lot located in front of Jack F. LaMarca Stadium at Punxsutawney Area High School.

Tom Fedigan, Punxsutawney Borough Police chief, said that last year, he applied for a grant with the borough's insurance company, Penn Prime, for the defensive driving course.

Sens take Game 1 in Fed League Finals

The Sykesville Senators have taken a 1-0 series lead over the Rossiter Miners in the best-of-seven Federation League Finals with a 6-3 win Tuesday night at the Reynoldsville American Legion Field. The contest was even at 3-3 after three innings before the Senators scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Then, big-time slugger Kasey Clinton sealed the win for Sykesville with a solo home run in the sixth inning.

A long-standing tradition: SS.C.D. Lawn Festival returns to town this weekend

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For 74 years, the Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church has followed a tradition that has brought not only members of the parish together but also members of the community — the Annual SS.C.D. lawn festival.

A fixture of the community since 1886, the church is rich with history. The lawn festival began in 1939, when the Catholic Daughters of the Americas ladies wanted to have a social for the parish,

John Ellery McMahan, 84

July 29, 2013

John Ellery McMahan, 84, of Rochester Mills, Pa., went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, July 28, 2013, at the Mountain Laurel Nursing & Rehab Center, Clearfield, Pa.

The son of John D. and Cleo (Pardee) McMahan, he was born on April 12, 1929.

John was a member of the C&MA Church and also attended the Methodist Church.

Mr. McMahan retired from U.S. Steel, American Bridge Division, Ambridge, Pa.

James Wesley Hockin, 92

July 29, 2013

James Wesley Hockin, 92, of Indiana, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013.

The son of Percival and Adah (Bassett) Hockin, he was born Sept. 20, 1920, in DuBois.

After moving to Punxsutawney, Jim attended Punxsutawney High School and graduated in 1938.

Jim was employed in the coal industry all his life. In 1950, he moved to Greene County, where he was employed by Duquesne Light Mining for 19 years. He moved to Indiana in 1969, where he was employed by R & P and the federal government as an inspector for MSHA. He retired in 1983 from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Joseph Ralph Hill, 78

Joseph Ralph Hill, 78, of Rossiter, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Mulberry Square in Punxsutawney.

He was born March 12, 1935, in Punxsutawney, the son of the late Harry and Flora (Pollock) Hill.

He was married first to Hazel Fleeger, who preceded him in death. He then married Joyce Stewart Hill, who survives.

He was an automotive mechanic by trade.

He was a member of the Laurel Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Rossiter.

He was a veteran of the US Navy.

Joseph Ford of S. Gilpin Street in Punxsutawney died on July 2, 2013.

Joseph is survived by Sharon Falin-Sanner, Judith Dawn Jones "His Sis,"
Amber Jones, Brittany Burnette, Corey Burnette, all the grandchildren and best friends Michael Sanner and Lester Tyler, all of Punxsutawney.

Services will be held at Eagles Alarm Ministry, 212 Mahoning St., Punxsutawney, on Aug. 18 at 4 p.m.

It’s official: Sawmill Run Bridge closed to traffic

After weeks of waiting the Sawmill Run bridge located on West Mahoning Street (Route 36) was finally closed to traffic on Monday morning, following weeks of delays due to utility relocation issues. The road is closed between the intersections of Walnut Street and Foundry Street for the replacement of the bridge carrying Route 36 over Sawmill Run.
A detour is in place using Route 436 and Route 119. This detour will be in place until November 2013. The $1,091,540 bridge replacement project is being constructed by M & B Services, LLC of Clarion.

Bikers’ ride to provide funding to benefit Clearfield/Jefferson County Suicide Prevention Team, Inc.

DUBOIS — When Dianna Helt lost her son, Paul Bair Jr., in 2011 to suicide, she was consumed with grief. But as time went on, she felt a desire to help others who were suffering a similar kind of grief.

Helt is the Chapter Products Officer of the Jefferson County A.B.A.T.E. of PA, Chapter No. 14, District 5, which stands for "Alliance of Bikers Aimed Toward Education."

A.B.A.T.E. is an organization of motorcyclists dedicated to the protection of the individual rights of motorcyclists through political change, public education and charitable works.

Rain clouds chased away, as Church in the Park goes off as planned

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Once again, those in attendance felt that God was watching over this year's Church in the Park celebration by disposing of the rain in time for the 10:30 a.m. service on Sunday in Barclay Square.
