Church Festival set for this weekend

On Friday, members of the Men’s Fraternity of Saints Peter & Paul Byzantine Church (pictured here) set up tents in Adrian in preparation for the church festival to be held this weekend.

The festival’s hours are from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m Sunday.

Troy J. Harper, 43

June 21, 2013

Troy J. Harper, 43, of Brookville, died at home Friday, June 21, 2013, after a hard-fought two-year battle against cancer.

Born Aug. 8, 1969, in Charleroi, Pa., he was the son of Rose Ann Fronzaglio Harper and the late William Harper.

He was a law partner at Dennison, Dennison & Harper Attorneys at Law.

Spotting those in need: Lisa's Ladybugs Patient Care Fund

A new, local non-profit organization called Lisa’s Ladybugs Patient Care Fund is starting in Punxsutawney with the aim of helping families that are going through cancer treatments for one of their family members.

The group hopes to provide assistance and aid to these families, especially in the areas of service-based needs such as cleaning, cooking or providing childcare.

Renne following God’s calling on his life

The parish of Saints Cosmas and Damian Church recently celebrated a momentous occasion, as the Rev. David M. Renne, a Punxsy native, officially became an ordained priest on June 7, at St. Peter Cathedral in Erie.

He will be taking on the duties as a parochial vicar at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Erie.

PHIL WELCOMES TOURISTS

A group of 14 visitors from the Alle-Kiski Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) came to Punxsutawney on Tuesday to learn more about the town and its legendary weather forecaster.

After their arrival at the Civic Center, the tourists heard some interesting stories of local history from Tom Curry.

Tour guides Terry and Charlotte Fye had arranged for Ron Ploucha, Phil's co-handler, to stop by and greet the guests.

Phyllis “Jean” Reitz, 83

Phyllis “Jean” Reitz, 83, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at McKinley Health Center, Brookville.

She was born Nov. 13, 1929, a daughter of the late Charles R. and Arabell (Enterline) Alcorn.

On June 6, 1953, she married Ray R. Reitz in the Worthville Church.

He preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2000.

She was a member of the Cliff United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, gardening, canning, sewing and reading.

She was a member of the Ringgold Ladies Auxiliary and taught Sunday School and the Good News Club.

Priscilla Ann Bridge, 53

June 20, 2013

Priscilla Ann Bridge, 53, of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, June 20, 2013, at UPMC-Presbyterian Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.

She was born March 30, 1960, in Grove City, Pa., the daughter of Rev. George R. and Ida Belle (James) Krupp.

She was married to David C. Bridge, who survives.

She was a cafeteria worker for the Punxsutawney Area School District.

She attended the Tuesday Night Bible Study Group at St. Peter's United Church of Christ.

Her greatest joy in life was seeing her son, David, graduate from college.

Elkin’s ‘McDonald’s Coffee Crew’ to host spaghetti benefit

Sometimes you can find support in the unlikeliest places and for one
courageous woman battling cancer, she found it at McDonald's. Marsha Elkin is currently in remission from a third battle with cancer. While stopping in at McDonald’s, she met up with a group of people who soon became not only friends but also a wonderful support group. Those friends are hosting a spaghetti benefit dinner from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the McCalmont Township Fire Hall in Anita. Pictured are Bob Black, Carol Gaston, Randy Redding and Elkin.
