Punxsy senior Garrett Zimmerman and the rest of his Class of 2013 classmates walked the stage and received their diplomas, marking the end of their academic careers on Friday.
But Monday, Zimmerman and Punxsyâ€™s four other seniors â€” Michael Blose, Jamie Bush, Taylor Phillips and Ty Zimmerman â€” hope to extend their high school athletic careers when they take on Hopewell in the opening round of the PIAA State Championships in St. Marys.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” The weather was perfect, with not a cloud in the sky, as
the Punxsutawney Area High School Class of 2013 graduated Friday night.

Francis Jerome (Jerry) Fiscus, 80, a longtime resident of Brookville, passed away peacefully at the Laurelbrooke Assisted Living Facility on Friday, May 31, 2013.
He was born June 16, 1932, in Brookville, a son of the late Steven Francis Fiscus and Lyda Louella (Walters) Fiscus.
He married Ruth Snyder Fiscus of Timblin on June 16, 1951, having a double-ring ceremony with his sister, Mary Fiscus Martz and Wendell Darl Martz.
He and Ruth were married 61 years, and she passed away on Dec. 18, 2012.
A celebration was held Thursday evening in honor of a woman who has dedicated 14 years of service to the community as executive director of the Chamber of Commerce.
Marlene Lellock was honored â€” by fellow members of the chamber, State Rep. Sam Smith and Punxsutawney Mayor James Wehrle.
Wehrle presented Lellock with a proclamation, proclaiming May 30 to be Marlene Lellock Day.
Smith presented Lellock with a letter of congratulations for doing such a good job serving the community of Punxsutawney.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” Tonight at 7 p.m., members of the Class of 2013 at Punxsutawney Area High School will take what may be the most important walk of their lives thus far, as they walk the stage to claim their diplomas.
And the man who has been chosen to see them off from PAHS, Alan Freed, is a man with a diverse background and plenty of local ties.
Freed, who currently lives in Ambridge â€”Â nestled in Beaver County west of Pittsburgh â€” with his wife of 22 years, Amy, and his 14-year-old daughter, Carrie, was a member of the Class of 1986 at PAHS.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” On Thursday, Punxsutawney Borough Police Chief Thomas Fedigan reported the arrest of a Big Run woman, who allegedly attempted to mail 39 packets of heroin to North Dakota.

The Punxsy Eagles No. 1231 Men and Ladies Auxiliary, Eagle Riders, Troop C. of the Pennsylvania State Police and Borough Police will be conducting free car seat checks and fingerprinting children on Sunday, June 2, from noon to 4 p.m.
This is the fourth year for the Child Safety Car Seat Check. The event will be held in the Punxsy Eagles parking lot and is open to the public.
Coloring books will be available to each child.
Carson Kelly Sherwood, 66, of Hilliard, Florida, formerly of Mahaffey, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 25, 2013.
Carson was born Nov. 9, 1946, in Mahaffey, a son of the late Ralph L. and Wilma (Campbell) Sherwood.
He worked for Season All & Thermal Guard in Punxsutawney for 32 years.
He was a member of the Punxsutawney Eagles No. 1231, Hilliard Florida VFW Post No. 10095 and served his country in the U.S. Army as a Combat Vet in Vietnam with Riverine Force-Spear Headers, 9th Infantry Division, from May 1966 to May 1968.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” In this country, there are those who can vote and whose actions can make a difference.
But animals have no voice.
They are the innocent creatures whose lives often hang in the balance and whose fates are left up to the human beings who choose to save them.
At a recent event, Senator, Roy C. Afflerbach, Ret. of Red Lion, visited Punxsutawney with the goal of educating members of the community on how to identify animal abuse and what to do about it when they do witness it.
After leaving office, Afflerbach started his own lobbying firm â€” the Afflerbach Group, LLC.
The Lady Chucks fell in a closely contested, 2-0 District IX championship game Wednesday afternoon in Brockway at the hands of St. Marys.
