It was a day of honoring not only those fighting for our country but those who gave their lives while fighting for it.

For the men of the Rossiter American Legion Post 582, it was a busy morning Monday as they headed out to seven different cemeteries, holding a memorial service at each one.

Rocker Bret Michaels plays charity concert in DuBois

It was a sunny and beautiful evening Sunday as hundreds of people joined together at the Treasure Lake Ski Lodge for a rock concert featuring Bret Michaels, who is best known as the lead singer of the 80's rock band Poison.

Barbara A. Kennis, 63

Barbara A. Kennis, 63, of Mercer, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 24, 2013, at Grove City Medical Center.  

Barbara was born Dec. 1, 1949, in Kane, Pa., a daughter of George R. and Margaret (Zemlin) Jerko.

She graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School class of 1967 and cum laude from Indiana

University of Pennsylvania class of 1971.

Barbara worked 25 years as a teacher for the Mercer Area School District.

On July 18, 1970, she married her husband, Michael P. Kennis, who survives, at home.

Ervin J. Schlabach, 68

Ervin J. Schlabach, 68, of Rossiter, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born June 7, 1944, in Middlefield, Ohio, a son of the late John E. and Emma M. (Miller) Schlabach.

He was the husband of the former Katie Byler. She survives.

Mr. Schlabach enjoyed spending his time with his horses, fishing and his dog, Shorty.

He was a very kind-hearted man with a sense of humor.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Two days on the ground where the heroes among us train

FORT INDIANTOWN GAP — If you didn't grow up as a family member of someone who was in The National Guard, chances are there's a little bit of confusion as to what exactly the role these individuals who serve might play.

In college, I had some Guard friends, and I always sort of saw them as part soldier, part civilian. But earlier this month, I had the opportunity to take part in a Boss Lift program held at the training grounds for The Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, and it was there that I learned there is much more to it than that.

PCS graduates seven in its Class of 2013

Friday, the Punxsutawney Christian School Class of 2013 celebrated its graduation, and seven graduates received their diplomas.

Speaking at the event was Michele Huey, founder of the board of directors and author.

AFTER 14-PLUS YEARS, LELLOCK MOVING ON TO NEW HORIZONS

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After 14 years and a month, the Punxsutawney Area Chamber of Commerce will be under new leadership, as Marlene Lellock will be taking her talents to the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center as its new executive director.

Spirit closed today in observance of Memorial Day

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, The Spirit offices are closed today, and there is no paper.
