Duke to be named to Punxsy Sports Hall of Fame

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Saturday, Punxsutawney Area High School's Athletic Department will host its Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

In anticipation of the event, The Spirit will feature the biography of one member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 each day.

Today's featured athlete is Kim Duke.

Duke was a member of the Class of 2000 and was an outstanding athlete and letter winner in basketball, track and field and volleyball.

Retired members of the Punxsutawney National Guard are planning a reunion to be held May 11 at the Punxsutawney Lions Club.

Ed Decker is a 1978 graduate and was the first football player in the history of PAHS to set a record of 1,000 yards rushing.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It is said that when William Penn discovered Pennsylvania in the 1680s, at least 95 percent of the land was covered by forest.

Its hard to believe that now, as we look around us at the once-big forest now populated with towns and cities.

Once known as the lumber region, Pennsylvania became the home of many lumber camps.

Traveling from one lumber camp to another was William T. Clarke, a photographer who loved capturing the daily life of the lumber industry.

Work to start today on intersection of Routes 119 and 322 in Sandy Township

DUBOIS — On behalf of Gov. Tom Corbett, PennDOT has announced that work to improve the Route 119/322 "Blinker Parkway" intersection in Sandy Township will begin today.

When work completes late this year, area drivers will be able to travel through a wider intersection with improved visibility and enhanced safety.

Work will include construction of turning lanes, roadway widening, slight roadway re-alignment, drainage improvements, new curbing and sidewalk, curb ramps and traffic signal upgrades.

Getting serious: Tonight is final chance to see 2013 Variety Show

“That's a wrap,” as the 2013 Punxsutawney Area High School Variety Show will wind down tonight with one last performance at 7 p.m. at the PAHS Auditorium.

Tickets for the show are available at the door, and a portion of the proceeds go to the Margaret C. Boles Foundation.

Fire marshal still investigating cause of Crawfordtown blaze

CRAWFORDTOWN — There is still no determined cause as to what started the fire that destroyed a camp at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at 44 Crawfordtown Rd. in Crawfordtown, Young Township.

"The structure was fully involved and was a huge fireball when firefighters arrived on scene," said Bryan Smith, Punxsutawney Fire
Department chief.

Smith said firefighters got a good hit on the fire and were able to knock the flames down in quick succession.

Chamber mixer at PAH to showcase four new health providers, services

The Punxsutawney Area Hospital will proudly welcome four new health providers to its team with a Chamber of Commerce Mixer, to be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, in the front lobby of the hospital.

The event will give the public a chance not only to meet the new providers but also to talk with members of the Senior Administrative Team and Medical Staff.

From 5 to 6 p.m., the Medical Outpatient Clinic will be giving demonstrations on the Teleburn Service.

James Earl Bennett, 78

James Earl Bennett, 78, of Ridgway, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Hamot Medical Center in Erie.

He was born Aug. 7, 1934, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late James Robert and Ella Grace (McQuown) Bennett.

On June 15, 1957, he married the former Diane Dunmire. She survives.

He served in the United States Army after the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Bennett worked at Airco Carbon in St. Marys and Punxsutawney.

He loved the outdoors, fishing and camping.

He was fondly known as “Papa” by his grandchildren and great
grandchildren, whom he dearly loved.
