Helen G. Brickell, 92

April 10, 2013

Helen G. Brickell, 92, of Smithport, Pa., died Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.

The daughter of George Ray and Lillian (Williams) Brickell, she was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in Banks Twp., Indiana County.

Helen was a lifelong member of the Wilgus Wesleyan Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher and church treasurer.

For 30 years, she was employed as a seamstress at Sportswear in Punxsu-
tawney, prior to her retirement in 1984.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Are you ready for some fudge?

Yup, it's that time again — time for the annual PAHS Variety Show to be held at 7 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday at the high school auditorium, with a portion of the proceeds to go toward the Margaret C. Boles Foundation.

Austin Sabatucci, assistant executive director, said the theme this year is "It's Our Time."

"We have a lot of diverse skits this year; they're very original, especially after talking to the advisors," Sabatucci said, adding that the show will be very funny and will appeal to a broad audience this year.

Dr. Alveda King speaks about civil rights and abortion at Clarion University

CLARION — Clarion University's Mary L. Seifert Cultural Series — "Realities of Race" — continued on Monday with a presentation of "The True Meaning of the Dream" by Dr. Alveda King.

The series, according to Clarion University's website, "was established to provide the Clarion University community with cultural experiences that inspire learning through thoughtful discussions."

And King knows a thing or two about cultural experiences, being the niece of famous civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Police: Bullet breaks window of Rose Township business

ROSE TOWNSHIP — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the discharge of a firearm into an occupied structure.

At 9 a.m. Tuesday, police said, actor(s) discharged a pistol from the Allegheny Boulevard area of the Brookville Borough.

The bullet ricocheted, broke a window and damaged the window screen at EarthWorx, located along Route 36.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 938-0510.

Arthur “Dutch” Kline, Jr., 82

Arthur “Dutch” Kline, Jr., 82, of Knox Dale, died Monday, April 8, 2013 at Brookside Manor.

He was born Feb. 26, 1931, in Yatesboro, a son of the late Arthur and Minnie (Allenbaugh) Kline, Sr.

He was a graduate of Reynoldsville High School.

Dutch worked at Jackson China in the Quality Control department for 30 years.

He also had worked at Reynoldsville Casket Company for seven years.

He was a simple man that loved summertime and enjoyed walking in the outdoors with his dog, Tonya.

Surviving relatives include a sister, Geraldine Vanwhy of Punxsutawney;

Borough Council continues discussion of bridge replacement project

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Sewer relocation work will proceed ahead of the Elk Run Route 119 bridge replacement project, which is scheduled to begin this summer after school has let out.

Punxsutawney Borough Council received an update on the Route 119 and 310 intersection road construction project during Monday’s council meeting.

“The sewer line has been revised and reviewed with the borough and sent on to PennDOT for review,” said Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager.
White said major work on the bridge and detour will not start until June.

Post 62 essay winners thankful for their freedoms

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The John Jacob Fisher American Legion Auxiliary Unit 62 recently sponsored an essay contest titled “What Freedom Do I Enjoy Most?” Two hundred eighteen students from the Punxsutawney Area schools, SS.C.D. School and the Punxsutawney Christian School submitted essays.

Fourteen winners were chosen by Unit 62, and five first-place winners were sent on to the American Legion Auxiliary Council for further judging.

Vernie E. Stankovich, 85

April 8, 2013

Vernie E. Stankovich, 85, of Stump Creek, died on Sunday, April 7, 2013, after a lengthy illness at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Born May 11, 1927, in Cramer, she was the daughter of the late Steve and Susie (Krucelyak) Cherban. She married Edward Joseph Stankovich, who preceded her in death.

She had worked at Sylvania in Emporium and Rollo Jensen in Punxsutawney.

She was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic
Church; were she was active with the “Kitchen Crew.”

She was a devoted mother and grandmother.

Kenneth C. Reiter Jr., 69

April 8, 2013

Kenneth C. Reiter Jr., 69, of Reynoldsville passed away at 3:26 a.m. on Monday, April 8, 2013, at his home.

Born March 4, 1944, in Punxsutawney, Kenneth was the son of the late Kenneth C. Reiter Sr. and Nola D. Nichols Reiter.

On May 25, 1963, he married Sandra L. Jones Reiter, of Reynoldsville, who survives.

He was a 1962 graduate of Reynoldsville High School and a retired employee of Stockdale Mine Supply in Frostburg, Pa.

Kenneth served with the U.S. Air Force in the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Reynoldsville.

Solid Williamsport holds Punxsy softball in check

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A solid all-around softball team is always a challenge, but even more so when a team has limited outside and game time before the matchup.

Despite being on its way to being a good softball club, Punxsy could not match the quality Williamsport squad on Saturday and dropped a close game for the majority of the day, 10-1.

“That was a good quality team over there. They have offense with the pitching to go with it,” noted Lady Chucks coach Alan Pifer. “I told the girls from the start they had to share the hitting load."
