Lady Dutch take Round 1 from Lady Chucks softball

PUNXSUTAWNEY — One game does not make a softball season.

In what could be the first of three rounds, the St. Marys Lady Dutch scored a trio of runs in the top of the fifth and held off the Punxsy Lady Chucks to take Round One, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

The Lady Chucks (6-2) produced four hits and plated single scores in the first and second innings for a 2-0 lead.

The home team could not put together more than one hit in an at bat over the final five innings, including none in the sixth or seventh.

NWTF’s Bingaman offers tips, encourages safe hunting for spring gobbler season

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you thought last year's spring gobbler season was a bust because of the warm winter conditions, this year could be the exact opposite, according to Walter Bingaman, Regional Director for the North Central Pennsylvania Division of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF).

Bingaman said last year's extremely warm spring shortened spring gobbler season, which made it more challenging.

Past to Present’s Plow Days draw folks, machines of all ages

A blustery — and occasionally snowy — first day didn't stop the
Past to Present Machinery Association's 12th Annual Plow Day weekend from taking place Saturday and Sunday on Paradise Road in Henderson Township.

Tractors ranging from antiques to more modern models — about 20 on the first day and 30 on the second — took to the fields to plow throughout
the weekend while a spectator wagon carried visitors around the grounds and fields to watch.

Man accused of indecent assault

MCCALMONT TOWNSHIP — A 32-year-old man has been accused of allegedly having indecent contact with two female juveniles, ages 14 and 16, according to Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police.

Police reported that Donald G. Sprankle allegedly had contact with the females between January of 2006 and December of 2007 at a location along Knox Dale Road in McCalmont Township.

Sprankle was committed to the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of posting $100,000 cash bail.

Virginia Mae Walker, 79

April 25, 2013

Virginia Mae Walker, 79, Sykesville, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at DuBois Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 19, 1934, a daughter of the late Calvin and Della (Harold) Bishop.

Virginia married Glenn R. Walker on April 4, 1953. He survives and lives in Sykesville.
