Personal bests highlight Punxsy track and field at 15th Annual DeMan’s Invitational

BROOKVILLE — On a chilly day along Interstate-80, Punxsy was still able to record many personal best efforts amongst a 22-team field at Saturday’s 15th Annual DeMan’s track and field invitational.

The Chucks boys, highlighted by Kevin Hughes' and Will Harmon’s days, totaled four first places, while the Punxsy girls had three top- three placings in the non-team scoring event.

As a whole, the Punxsy boys had a good day with various personal best performances recorded.

Solid all-around afternoon takes Punxsy over Altoona baseball, 11-2

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A good start to a full slate of week’s games was just what Punxsy head coach Mike Dickey would have ordered.

The Chucks used a solid all-around game, both on the mound and at the plate, to take the Lions of Altoona, 11-2, on Monday afternoon in Punxsutawney.

Local crews battle a pair of blazes: Orvetta St. structure fire and Rossiter area flue fire

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Monday saw local crews battle a pair of fires — a quickly spreading one that started at 3:50 p.m. on Monday at 131 Orvetta St. in Punxsutawney and an evening fire that started in the flue of a house on Railroad Street in the Rossiter area.

Head Start students showcase what they’re learning at open houses

Punxsutawney Head Start Centers I, II and III and Early Head Start and Pre-K Counts Center, held an open house on Monday afternoon.

The open house gave students a chance to show what they are learning as well as what they do on a daily basis.

The event was also open to community members who may have been looking for a place to send their children.

“This is a nice opportunity for people to come and see what we're all about," said Autumn Reddinger, faculty member.

Duke to be named to Punxsy Sports Hall of Fame

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Saturday, Punxsutawney Area High School's Athletic Department will host its Punxsutawney Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony at the Punxsutawney Area High School.

In anticipation of the event, The Spirit will feature the biography of one member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2013 each day.

Today's featured athlete is Kim Duke.

Duke was a member of the Class of 2000 and was an outstanding athlete and letter winner in basketball, track and field and volleyball.
