Frances E. Rupert, 88

March 3, 2013

Frances E. Rupert, 88, formerly of Rossiter, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center in Punxsutawney.

She was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Canfield, Ohio, a daughter of the late William R. and Bessie (Hileman) Parish.

She was married to Raymond E. Rupert, who preceded her in death on
Sept. 28, 2010.

She was a homemaker and previously worked for the Adrian Hospital
Housekeeping Department.

She is survived by a daughter, Irene Rupert of Punxsutawney; and by
several nieces and nephews.

Chucks' D-IX champion duo lead team in Northwest Regional first night

ALTOONA — As was the case last weekend, the Chucks' district champion duo led the team in the first night of the AAA Northwest Regional Tournament on Friday.

Top-seed Joel Bowers (120) and Kaleb Young (126) paced the Punxsy effort with a combined three wins to move into the regional semifinals held at Altoona High School.

“We had a couple big wins. We had Bowers and Young get through to the semis. It is big matches now of all or nothing,” noted Punxsy head coach Eric Eddy.

Lady Raiders capture D-IX AA title with convincing win over Lady Wolves

BROOKVILLE — The Lady Raiders capped off their triumphant run in the D-IX AA playoffs with a convincing 63-51 victory to capture the title over the Lady Wolves Friday night at Clarion University's Tippin Gym.

"We've said all year that this team can do it (win a championship), and tonight we got it done," said Powell.

Thompson and Ford City High set to play for PIHL Open Cup 2013

NEVILLE ISLAND — When you love a sport and desire to play it to the highest level available, you will find some way to make it happen.

Punxsy Area High School sophomore Eli Thompson, with his family's support, is taking the bull by the horns, or skates to the ice in this case, to play scholastic ice hockey.

For the second year in a row through a co-op provision between high schools, Thompson is playing for and starting on Ford City High School's hockey team.

It’s Read Across America Day!

Today — March 2 — is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and students across the country and across the school district celebrated that day Friday.

The birthday is also known as Read Across America Day, encouraging children to read and helping them find enjoyment in doing so.

3, 2, 1... (Bingo) blast off!

SS.C.D. School is getting ready for an exciting Sunday event called "Bingo Blast."

The event will be held Sunday at the SS.C.D. auditorium, with doors opening at noon.

Lunch will be served at 12:15 p.m., and Bingo will follow at 1 p.m.

The cost is $15, which covers lunch and Bingo.

At the event, there will be 17 vendors on hand.

They will have 15 games of Bingo and three extra-cash Bingos.

All proceeds will benefit the school.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake at area bowling lanes to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters

PUNXSUTAWNEY — If you’re looking for a night out with the family or an opportunity to hang out with friends, you might have the chance to
combine it with donating to a good cause — the Bowl for Kids’ Sake event is coming to Jefferson County, with three different sessions scheduled: one at Brookville Lanes and two at Groundhog Lanes in Punxsutawney.

“Bowl for Kids’ Sake is our biggest fundraiser that supports local Big Brothers Big Sisters programs,” said Heidi Stahlnecker, program coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson, Elk and McKean counties.

Falls Creek woman killed in Thursday-morning crash on Route 153

HORTON TWP. – The Ridgway-based state police reported responding to a two-vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality at 10:47 a.m. on Thursday on State Route 153, 246 feet south of an unnamed street in Horton Township.

Desiree M. Smith, 26, of Falls Creek, was killed as a result of the crash.

According to police, the collision occurred as a 2000 Mazda 626 operated by Deidre M. Butler, 25, of Brockway was traveling north on State Route 153, and a 2011 Subaru Outback operated by Linda C. Jensen, 61, of Warren, was traveling south on Route 153.

Dora Lynn Sherry, 46

Dora Lynn Sherry, 46, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

She was born April 16, 1966, in New Castle, a daughter of Clarence E. Brown and the late Dr. Mattie Arnell Brown.

On April 25, 1987, she married Arthur Sherry. He survives.

She was a gentle, kind-spirited woman.

Dora was very artistic, and enjoyed painting, drawing and graphic arts.

She was very good at working on computers.

4-H CLUB PRESENTS CERTIFICATE AND RIBBON TO TRACTOR SUPPLY

The Jefferson County 4-H Club presented a certificate and paper clover ribbon to the Tractor Supply Co. store for its outstanding support during the September 2012 Fall Paper Clover campaign.

According to Susan Alexander, head of the 4-H Club, the Punxsutawney store was the class champion.

The 4-H Club will be selling paper clovers for its 2013 Spring Campaign, which will be held from May 8 to May 19.

People can purchase clovers for either $1 or $5, with 60 percent of proceeds going toward the 4-H Club.
