Get your Sneakers ready: Run/Walk for Someone Special coming up soon

Spring is a season of hope, and for avid runners and walkers in the area, the Run/Walk for Someone Special event is a chance to support a great cause.

The event will be held on April 7 in Sykesville with registration at 1:30 p.m. at the Town Hall.

The race will begin at 3 p.m.

Robindale Energy is sponsoring the event, and all proceeds stay local and will benefit children and adults with special needs through the Arc of Clearfield/Jefferson counties and Camp Friendship.

PennDOT presents potential plans for Margiotti Bridge

The Margiotti Bridge on Route 436 is scheduled to be replaced due to the cracks in the pillars beneath the bridge, one of which is pictured here.

Work begins on SR 310 bridge replacement project

INDIANA – On behalf of Governor Tom Corbett, PennDOT announced Wednesday that the bridges on Route 310 in Young Township will be replaced.

The residents of Young Township and motorists who travel on Route 310
will benefit from the replacement of two structurally deficient bridges in Jefferson County.

The Harmony No. 1 bridge over Elk Run, built in 1925, carries approximately 3,520 vehicles per day and will be replaced with a steel girder bridge.

Helman's Boxing held a Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing event at the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC) last Saturday night and raised $2,200 that was donated to the center.

Pictured is Rob McCoy (right), executive director of PACC, receiving the check from Alex London (left), 12, who was the winner of his 95-pound bout, which was stopped by the referee in the second round because he was dominating the match.

Helman's Boxing recently moved its practice facility into the second floor above the PACC Fitness Center in the old school board meeting room.

Butler County Community College to bring campus to Brockway

BROCKWAY — The staff of Butler County Community College (BC3) visited Brockway Area High School to announce that it will be bringing a campus to Jefferson County in Brockway.

"Butler County Community College was the first community college in Western Pennsylvania, and, therefore, we are the pioneers," said Susan Changnon, director of communications and marketing at BC3, who introduced the speakers for the day. "And so, today, I'm thinking, we're still pioneering."

Cleanup continues after diesel spill

Tuesday, workers continued to clean up property along Route 119 in North Mahoning Township, Indiana County, following a diesel spill on Monday.

BENEFIT TO HELP RHOADES’ CANCER BATTLE

A benefit event for Donna J. Rhoades will be held from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday at the Punxsy Eagles Club.

Rhoades, who was a former Groundhog Festival Committee member and former owner of Winslow Pizza, began battling uterine/ovarian cancer back in 2010.

After a long series of treatments and PET scans were completed, Rhoades was thought to be cancer-free.

Months later, another PET scan was conducted, and Rhoades was diagnosed with a cancerous lymph node in her abdomen.

All proceeds from the event will go towards Rhoades’ medical and travel expenses.

Leroy Dallas Bloom, 71

Leroy Dallas Bloom, 71, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Bloom was born Nov. 7, 1941, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Ralph and Effie (McHenry) Bloom.

Leroy was a retired farmer and truck driver and was the owner of Bloom Trucking.

He enjoyed going to antique tractor pulls with his friends.

James L. Sherry, 77

James L. Sherry, 77, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at McKinley Health Center in Brookville.

Mr. Sherry was born Dec. 3, 1935, in Juneau, a son of the late Harry E. and Hazel (McDowell) Sherry.

He served in the U.S. Army.

He was married to Barbara Ann (Tyger) Sherry, who survives, of Juneau.

He was a member of Valley Chapel Church.

Mr. Sherry worked 43 years for B & P Railroad before retiring.

He was a member of the FCRV Family Campers and Hikers and the John W. Jenks Lodge No. 534 in Punxsutawney.
