S.E.E.D. opens ancient doorways to learning for children at Rainbow Express Nursery school

PUNXSUTAWNEY — It's a subject that perks up the ears of almost every young child — DINOSAURS!

Over the course of the past week, the 4- and 5-year-olds at the Rainbow Express Nursery School have been studying dinosaurs, and last Friday, they were excited to receive a visit from an employee who works at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.

They were even more excited when they learned that she was from the Dinosaur Detectives program.

The school received the visit as part of the Students Extra Educational Development (S.E.E.D.) Program, which is sponsored by Shop n' Save.

District attorney Burkett speaks about problem of heroin in Jefferson County

BROOKVILLE — In recent months, heroin abuse has acted as the centerpiece of a number of high-profile criminal cases in Jefferson County and the surrounding area, and many are beginning to ask: why, and what can be done to stop it?

On Thursday, Jefferson County District Attorney Jeff Burkett attempted to answer some of those questions with his presentation of “Heroin in our Hometown” at the Heritage House in Brookville.

His speech explored the issue from his perspective serving as district attorney for more than 15 years now.

Ringgold truck/garage fire ruled accidental

RINGGOLD — The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal and Ringgold Area Fire Department investigated the origin and cause of a fire that destroyed a 2005 Peterbilt Log Truck and damaged a 40-by-60-foot garage on March 16 at 4:17 p.m.

The fire originated in the engine compartment, a report issued by PSP-Punxsy said, and was determined to be the result of an accidental cause.

There were no injuries, and damage was estimated at $100,000.

The Hawthorne, Dayton, Perry Township and Oliver Township fire companies assisted the Ringgold Area Fire Department at the scene.

Bowl For Kids’ Sake throws a strike!

The "Bowl For Kids' Sake" event was held Saturday at Groundhog Lanes in Punxsy.

The event is a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County.

Mabel L. Rishel, 85

Mabel L. Rishel, 85, Rossiter, died Monday, March 18, 2013, at Mahoning Riverside Manor, Punxsutawney.

She was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Frostburg, a daughter of James C. and Amber (Hamilton) Jordan.

On Feb. 26, 1949, she married Albert J. Hudak, who preceded her in death on April 3, 1982.

She then married Lloyd Joseph Rishel on March 19, 1988. He also preceded her in death, on Oct. 16, 1995.

Mabel was a graduate of the Punxsutawney High School Class of 1946.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church of Punxsutawney.

Larry "Joe" Joseph Sprankle, 53

Larry "Joe" Joseph Sprankle, 53, of York, Pa., formerly of Punxsutawney, died Saturday, March 16, 2013, at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa.

He was born July 24, 1959, in Punxsutawney, a son of Larry G. and Judy (Niel) Sprankle.

He was married to the former Ruth Buchholz.

He was a plumber by trade.

When it comes to children riding in cars, safety always comes first.
