PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” A much-needed upgrade to the Horatio Street Buffalo and Pittsburgh Railroad crossing was approved by Punxsutawney Borough Council at Monday's voting meeting.
"PennDOT is filing an application with the PUC for the approval to upgrade the railroad flashing lights (currently there are none) and circuitry where Horatio Street Crosses, at grade, the single track owned by B&P Railroad," said Ben White, Punxsutawney Borough manager.
The Chucks' Eli Lambiotte controls his Redbank Valley opponent in a match from Jan. 17. Lambiotte was one of seven Punxsy wrestlers to receive forfeits from Bradford on Tuesday night. Keegan Fischer and Brandon Wingert picked up bout wins in the 53-29 victory over the Owls in Bradford. The full story detailing the match can be found in Thursday's edition of The Spirit.
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” A win is the same result no matter if it is by 30, or a single point.
On Monday afternoon, Punxsy was happy to have enough to get past Brockway by four points, 35-31, in ninth-grade boys' hoops action in Punxsutawney.
"It was an ugly win, but a win is a win," noted Chucks head coach Todd Heigley.
Punxsy opened the affair by making one more bucket than Brockway for an 8-6 lead. The two opponents play equal in the second period, with each squad totaling seven points for a 15-13 intermission score.
INDIANA â€” In a follow-up to the death of a Glen Campbell man on Friday evening, Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said that toxicology tests will likely be the deciding factors in determining the cause of death of 28-year-old Christopher Brandner, whose frozen body was discovered Friday evening in a vacant lot in Glen Campbell borough.
The coroner, Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police and the Indiana County District Attorney investigated at the scene of the death.
INDIANA â€” Indiana County Coroner Michael Baker said an autopsy of a local man found Monday in White Township, Indiana County, has ruled out evidence of foul play.
The body of 50-year-old Jeffrey Moretti of Indiana was discovered at about 8:35 a.m. Monday near the rear entrance of the offices of Gazette Printers after employees reported for work.
Baker said the body did not appear to have indications of unexplainable trauma, and the building was not forcibly intruded upon.
Moretti was pronounced dead at the scene at 9 a.m.
BROOKVILLE â€” The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has sent a letter commending the staff of Jefferson County for its role in developing the county hazard mitigation plan, the commissioners announced at their meeting on Tuesday.
FEMA praised the county for its support and assistance in developing the plan, which expires on July 2, 2017, and contains mitigation strategies designed to reduce future disaster losses for the purpose of making the county's communities safer and more resilient to hazards.
There are all sorts of ways to keep learning fun, and pictured here are two such examples. It was another fun and exciting Monday night for these middle school-aged students who are participating in the Middle Schoolerâ€™s Library Club.
The students meet every Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, where they engage in a variety of activities, such as playing board games, drawing comics, watching movies, talking about books and socializing.
KNOX â€” After a tough stretch of games, the Chucks were able to bounce back into the win column on Monday night.
Punxsy did what it needed to do, including using a new defense, to prevail over Keystone, 55-45.
â€śIt was a great comeback win after being down last week and losing three games,â€ť stressed Chucks head coach Dirk Neal. â€śWe bounced back against a nice 14-win team in Keystone, which was in a must win game for them. The kids really hustled and did the little things they had to do to win.â€ť
FOXBURG â€” When the shots are dropping, the Punxsy Lady Chucks have been winning this season.
On Monday night, the Lady Chucks started the night hitting their shots for a strong start on their way to a 59-39 victory over the host Lady Falcons of A-C Valley.
â€śWe shot the ball very well tonight. We had good look and did a nice job running our offense,â€ť commented Lady Chucks coach Randy Reitz.
The Punxsy director continued, â€śOur defense, we continued to press the ball very well and we able to get a lot of turnovers off it.â€ť
PUNXSUTAWNEY â€” After scoring the game's first 18 points, the eighth-grade Chucks boys' hoops team used the early surge to down the Rovers of Brockway by the same margin, 44-26, in Punxsutawney on Monday afternoon.
The Punxsy victory improved the team's season record to 12-6. The team has now won five of its past six contests, including the last four. The Monday win also gave the home team a â€¨measure of revenge, after dropping the second game of the year at Brockway.
