PAEA president Gill fires back at school board regarding ratified contract

PUNXSUTAWNEY — At Tuesday night's voting meeting of the Punxsutawney Area School Board, the president of the Punxsutawney Area Education Association (PAEA) responded to comments made by several school board members during the board's Jan. 8 meeting, when the new contract was ratified.

The PAEA represents more than 180 teaching professionals in local public schools, said Don Gill, president of the PAEA spoke to the school board Tuesday.

"I came into teaching as a second career, and, like my colleagues, teaching is more than a job or a paycheck. It's a calling," he said.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — For many young boys and girls growing up, their dream is to one day play professional sports.

With America's pastime being baseball, many children have grown up with the dream of making the Big Leagues or playing Olympic level softball. But for some children, limitations are keeping them from being able to make that dream come true.

Police: Reynoldsville man, 33, dies from work accident injuries

BROOKVILLE — Punxsutawney-based Pennsylvania State Police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old Reynoldsville man who died as result of injuries he sustained Tuesday in an industrial accident.

Brian Jason Gardner was injured at approximately 12:40 a.m. Tuesday while at work at Brookville Wood Products in Pine Creek Township.

Gardner was transported to Brookville Hospital by Jefferson County EMS for treatment but succumbed to his injuries at approximately 2:43 a.m., police said.

Mazy W. Shaffer, 92

Mazy W. Shaffer, 92, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.

Mazy was born June 24, 1920, in Shelocta, a daughter of the late Orie Kerner and Wilimina (Reitz) Kerner.

Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph R. Shaffer.

Surviving relatives include two sisters, Maxine Seger of New Kensington and Marie Smith of Brookville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Andrew Joseph Verostic, 65

Andrew Joseph Verostic, 65, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. at UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh.

He was born April 8, 1947, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Andrew James and Helene (Hagney) Verostic.

On April 1, 1967, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church, he married the former Patricia Mae Sikora.

She survives and resides in Pittsburgh.

Mr. Verostic worked as an engineer for Union Switch and Signal in Pittsburgh.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, woodcrafting, hunting and fishing.
