Mazy W. Shaffer, 92, of Punxsutawney, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at Mulberry Square Elder Care & Rehabilitation Center.
Mazy was born June 24, 1920, in Shelocta, a daughter of the late Orie Kerner and Wilimina (Reitz) Kerner.
Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph R. Shaffer.
Surviving relatives include two sisters, Maxine Seger of New Kensington and Marie Smith of Brookville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Andrew Joseph Verostic, 65, of Pittsburgh, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. at UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh.
He was born April 8, 1947, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Andrew James and Helene (Hagney) Verostic.
On April 1, 1967, at Saints Cosmas and Damian Roman Catholic Church, he married the former Patricia Mae Sikora.
She survives and resides in Pittsburgh.
Mr. Verostic worked as an engineer for Union Switch and Signal in Pittsburgh.
He enjoyed his grandchildren, woodcrafting, hunting and fishing.
PUNXSUTAWNEY — Of course, the weather was perfect for the induction of Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel as the 2013 inductee into the Meteorologist Hall of Fame at the Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center on Saturday.
Peggy Johnston, chairperson of the exhibit and program committee for the Weather Discovery Center, read Cantore's introduction for being chosen for the Meteorologist Hall of Fame.
"We are pleased to have him join the ranks of other very accomplished experts in the field of meteorology whose pictures adorn our lobby at the Weather Center," she said.
PUNXSUTAWNEY— Groundhog Day is the one day of the year that brings in visitors from across the nation and other continents.
Traveling from Dallas, Texas, this year were four generations of a family that has made this trek for the fourth time.
What’s special about 2013, however, is the addition of the fourth generation, 9-month-old Michael Davis Harmon.
He joined his mother, Kristen Harmon, grandmother Sally Muhl and great-grandmother Donna W. Davis for his first-ever visit to not only Punxsutawney but to Gobbler's Knob.
