Dual committee meeting leads to further discussion concerning new PAHS weight room

PUNXSUTAWNEY — A joint meeting of the Punxsutawney Area School Board's Building and Maintenance and Athletic committees was held Tuesday, and expansion of the weight room at Punxsutawney Area High School into what has been a maintenance garage was discussed.

Jim Baun, chair of Building and Maintenance, said that the Punxsutawney Booster Club was willing to pay to expand and upgrade the present weight room facility. Bill Vasallo, PAHS athletic director, said his understanding was that the Booster Club was willing to donate the funds to pay for the weight room upgrade.

Brookville author’s book signing to benefit Punxsutawney Memorial Library, animals in need

BROOKVILLE — If you’re interested in benefiting two good causes and maybe having a pleasant day out while you’re at it, you might have your chance on March 2 at the Punxsutawney Memorial Library, which will be hosting Brookville author L.A. Adamson for a book signing that will raise money to help the library and sheltered animals.

Adamson, whose first name is Lisa, is the author of “Soggypaw Siberian Huskies,” a chapter book that tells the tale of a husky named Czarah as she tries to assemble a sled dog team to fulfill her owner’s dream of conquering the Great Pennsylvania Sled Dog Race.

Abigail “Gayle” Anderson, 90

Mrs. Abigail “Gayle” Anderson, 90, of Lake Wales, Florida, died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at her home.

She was born June 1, 1922, in Marion Center, Pa., and married her husband, Emory A. Anderson, Sr., on Dec. 19, 1941.

They lived in Lake Wales from 1957 until 1964 and returned to Lake Wales from Punxsutawney in 1986.

She was a loving wife and mother and a beautiful example of love and caring for her family.

She was a bookkeeper and a secretary alongside her late husband in their
family-owned businesses.

Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Lake Wales Woman’s Club.

Francis J. "Cheech" Esposito, 82

Francis J. "Cheech" Esposito, 82, Brockway, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 8, 1930, in Brockway, a son of Frank and Maria Carmella Provenzano Esposito.

He was previously married to Martha Hoskavich, who survives, of Brockway.

He was the owner of Esposito Beverage in Brockway from 1951 until 2006.

He was a member of St. Tobias in Brockway.

Cheech was a lifetime member of the S.O.I. Club in Brockway and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Clark A. Rhodes, 85

Clark A. Rhodes, 85, of Punxsutawney, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

Mr. Rhodes was born Nov. 20, 1927, in Adamsburg, a son of the late John P. and Alta E. (Norris) Rhodes.

Clark is survived by his wife, Marilyn A. (McQuown) Rhodes, of Punxsutawney.

They were married July 1, 1950.

Mr. Rhodes served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and the Air Force during the Korean War.

He was retired from the Linde Company, a subsidiary of Union Carbide after 39-and-a-half years of service as a District Business Manager.

Lady Chucks seek 3rd 'W' of year over Lady Dutch in D-IX semis

ST. MARYS — The saying goes it is tough to beat a team three times in one year.

Tonight, the Punxsy Lady Chucks will test the saying and look to prove it wrong in their case.

After sweeping the season series in games that were not in doubt for most of the contests, Punxsy will try to best St. Marys in the District IX AAA girls' basketball semifinal.

The tip-off will be at 7 p.m. in St. Marys Area High School gymnasium.

The winner of tonight's contest will move on to face Bradford on Saturday, Mar. 2, at Clarion University at a time to be determined.

Elementary tourney wraps up with final quartet of contests

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After 12 games in three nights, the annual boys' basketball elementary tournament wrapped up with another night of quality court action.

The opening pair of contests saw a close contest before a runaway victor claimed the later fourth- and fifth-grade editions.

After leading 8-5 over the first 10 minutes of play, Alabama scored three of the four second-half points for the 11-6 win over Colorado.

For the second night in a row, Princeton was paced by Andrew Young, who netted 12 points. Young and the Tigers swept past the Ducks of Oregon, 26-7.

C. “Ray” Pearce, 53

C. “Ray” Pearce, 53, of Mahaffey died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at his home, where he most wanted to be, surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

The son of Calvin Edsel and Imogene “Jean” (Muth) Pearce, he was born on Dec. 18, 1959, in DuBois.

Ray was a graduate of Purchase Line High School.

A man who greatly enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, Ray especially loved hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling and experiencing the freedom to head out on road trips.

Ray was a social member of the Sons of the American Legion in Glen Campbell.

Mary Rose (Melvin) Green, 98

Mary Rose (Melvin) Green, 98, of Blairsville, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at St. Andrews, in Indiana, Pa.

She was born Aug. 1, 1914, in Rossiter, the daughter of the late David and Josephine (Caretti) Melvin.

Darlene De Voe Fairman, 72

Darlene De Voe Fairman, 72, of Hamilton, died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, in Hospice of Hamilton in Hamilton, Ohio.

She was born in Punxsutawney on April 12, 1940, the daughter of Darrell and Ruth (DeVoe) Burns. She married Raymond Fairman on Feb. 10, 1962, in Dallas, Texas, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 2012.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church (Hamilton, Ohio), where she had been active and chairwoman of many committees.
