Happy New Year; Spirit closed Wednesday

From The Spirit’s staff to your families, we want to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope you celebrate in a safe manner and have a wonderful
holiday!

In observance of New Year’s Eve, our offices will be closing today at 3 p.m.

The office will remain closed Wednesday, Jan. 1, and there will be no paper.

Regular office hours will resume at 8 a.m. Thursday.

Siple serves others through The Santa Project

CLOE — During the holiday season, many get caught up with buying gifts for family and friends. Some may never stop to think about those who may not have the means to buy gifts or even have a Christmas.

For one little boy and his disabled grandmother, such was the case — until one man made it his mission to reach out and help.

Duane Siple is a kindhearted man who has spent the last 10 years living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Clarabelle M. (Murray) Davis, 85

Clarabelle M. (Murray) Davis, 85, of Vandergrift, formerly of Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, at Kittanning Care Center, in Kittanning, Pa.

She was born June 9, 1928, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late George and Edith (Coy) Murray.

Clarabelle lived in the Vandergrift and Apollo area for the last 25 years.

She was a self-employed beautician in Punxsutawney for several years and was also the owner/operator of L&M Crafts in Pitcarin for several years.

Dwight K. Elkin, 87

Dwight K. Elkin, 87, of Fowler Township, Ohio, died Sunday morning, Dec. 29, 2013, at Omni Manor Health Care Center in Austintown.

He was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Punxsutawney, Porter Township, the son of the late H. Clair and Bessie Elizabeth Miller Elkin.

Dwight was a 1944 graduate of Punxsutawney High School.

He served in the Navy as a ships fireman in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

Dwight was entrusted in the Pacific with piloting the Admiral's shuttle launch between ships in the fleet.
