Punxsy Groundhog Club burrows into new home

Boys' soccer sends seniors off right at home with 3-2 win

PUNXSUTAWNEY — "You're going to see a barn-burner here. Eighty minutes up and down the field is what we need."

That's what assistant coach Kevin Hughes said before Punxsy took on Brockway for their final home game of the season.

With a 2-0 lead with about three minutes left in the first half, Hughes looked over and said, "See, this is exactly what we were looking for."

Head Coach Phil Shenkle agreed that his team laid it all out on the line en route to a 3-2 victory over the Rovers.

Seniors at PAHS recently elected six girls to make up the 2013 Homecoming Queen’s Court. The court members are Emily Horner, Elizabeth Depp-Hutchinson, Isabella Gallina, Ashley Reitz, Emily Reitz and Searra Wasicki.

Mahoning Shadow Trail thanks supporters, plans for Saturday’s race

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Mahoning Shadow Shuffle decided to celebrate its 10th anniversary by honoring one of its longtime supporters, Indiana First Bank located on Snyder Hill Road in Young Township.

Matt Taladay, president of the Mahoning Shadow Trail, said he and Sue Wolfe, treasurer, presented Shannon Kaza, assistant vice president/branch manager, Indiana First Bank, with a photograph of the trail for being one of the first major backers to give a very generous donation that was used toward constructing the pavilion at Fordham.

Lois Marie Schumacker, 79

October 9, 2013

Lois Marie Schumacker, 79, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2013, at DuBois Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 28, 1934, in Rossiter, a daughter of the late Rheed and Edna (Henry) States.

Mrs. Schumacker was Methodist by faith.

She enjoyed word puzzles, reading the Bible, crocheting and needlepoint. She was a tremendous help in caring for her grandson, John Paul Holeva, during his illness.

Richard G. Pence, 84

Richard G. Pence, 84, Ringgold, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville.

He was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Brookville, a son of the late Dolly Agnes (Shreckengost) and Foster Grant Pence.

On July 5, 1951, he married Lois (Shirey) Pence, who survives.

He was a member of the Ringgold United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the Ringgold Fire Company, the New Bethlehem Masonic Lodge #522 and a Scout Leader.

He was retired from Citizen Utilities of New Bethlehem.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved woodworking, tying flies and loading shells.

Larry Boyd “Squeak” Smith, 68

Larry Boyd “Squeak” Smith, 68, Canoe Ridge Road, Rossiter died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at home with his loving family.

Born on April 17, 1945, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Virgil and L. Marie (Knisley) Smith.

On Jan. 4, 1965, he married the former Jane Marie Hofman. She survives.

Prior to his retirement in 2007, Larry worked as a coal miner at Greenwich Colliers, he was a mechanic for Murray Ford, Don Vite, Conrad’s, and the Brookville Truck Stop and was a foreman for Whipstock.

Mona Elaine Davidson, 73

October 9, 2013

Mona Elaine Davidson, 73, most recently of Lemoyne, Pa., passed away on Monday, Oct. 7, while in the company of family, at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pa. Mrs. Davidson is formerly of Freeport, PA.

Mona was born in Ernest, Pa., on March 24, 1940. She was the daughter of the late Lorena Rebecca (Shafer) Lettie and Elmer Leroy Lettie of Punxsutawney. She was one of seven children, with two brothers and four sisters. She was a 1957 graduate of Punxsutawney Area Joint High School.

Shugars waives preliminary hearing

Michael Christopher Shugars, 32, Punxsutawney, who was arrested in connection with the death of Chet Allen Haddow, 33, of Punxsutawney, waived his preliminary hearing on Tuesday at District Magistrate Douglas Chambers' office in Punxsutawney.

Annual Slice of Hope fundraiser to honor Polly Farbo this Friday

As the nation recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness month, Fox's Pizza Den is gearing up to raise money for a good cause and to remember a dear friend.

Fox's Pizza Den will celebrate Slice of Hope, a pizza industry charitable initiative, during which it will be donating 10 percent of sales on Friday to the Karen Mullen Breast Cancer Foundation.

The event will also honor the late Polly Farbo, who was the spokesperson for Slice of Hope at Fox's before passing away this year.
