Mondi honored for five decades of service at Circle Hill Cemetary

Pictured is Frank Mondi (center) receiving a granite plaque from the Circle Hill Cemetery Association in appreciation of his 50 years of service in caring for the grounds over these many years.

The plaque will be mounted on the exterior of the Circle Hill Cemetery building with the following words of dedication: “In appreciation of Frank Mondi for fifty years service. Circle Hill Cemetery Association.”

Local man joins protest at WWII Memorial in D.C.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Sunday, Oct. 13, began as any other day, but for one local citizen, a trip to Washington, D.C., would be a trip that he would never forget.

Pastor George Rathmell of Punxsutawney traveled to Washington, D.C., and attended a protest at the U.S. National World War II Memorial to support veterans.

Punxsutawney shut out by Clarion on Senior Night

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Senior Night is a moment that every athlete looks forward to, and a night that every athlete will remember for the rest of his or her life.

When the nine Punxsutawney senior football players — Matt Burkett, Andrew Bullers, Christian Falgout, Jonathan Voss, Clayton Dale, Will Curtis, Josh Schuckers, Jesse Walk, Parker Weaver — took the field to be recognized prior to Friday's game, they had their moment they've been waiting for.

2013 trick-or-treat times, Halloween events

Here’s a list of local trick-or-treat/Halloween events:

• Brookville — Halloween will be celebrated Thursday, Oct. 31.

The parade will be held at 5 p.m., starting at the Y.M.C.A. and ending at the Brookville Fire Dept. on Madison Avenue.

Trick-or-treating will begin at 5:30 p.m., immediately after the parade, and will continue until 8 p.m.

• Big Run Borough — Big Run Borough will hold trick or treat from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Trick or treaters are to go only to homes with the porch light on.

A welcome sight: Last of the detours wraps up

At long last, the detours that have plagued Punxsy have ended, as the new bridge carrying Route 36 over Sawmill Run in Punxsutawney was opened to normal traffic patterns on Friday.

According to Deborah Casadei, PennDOT District 10 public information officer, work will continue on the project under flagger-controlled lane restrictions.

This $1,091,540 bridge replacement project is being completed by M & B Services, LLC of Clarion.

The bridge has been closed since August.

Sara Evans to bring her talents, her Christmas cheer to PACC

PUNXSUTAWNEY — With the Christmas season looming ahead and Christmas decorations already on store shelves, Christmas carols are just
around the corner.

Knowing that is the case, you may be looking for a concert to get your vocal chords warmed up for the season. If that is so, mark your calendars for the Sara Evans Concert, which will be held on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Punxsutawney Area Community Center (PACC).

Gabrielle Giffords intern gives presentation at Penn State DuBois

DUBOIS — As part of its programming associated with National Coming Out Day and Hispanic Heritage Month, Penn State University invited author, speaker and activist Daniel Hernandez to speak on campus on Wednesday.

Hernandez was a congressional intern in the office of former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords during the deadly Tucson, Ariz., shooting in January 2011. He has been credited with having saved her life during the
attack.

Punxsy Borough leaf pick-up schedule

October 17, 2013

The borough's annual fall leaf collection program will begin this Monday, Oct. 21, and will continue through November.

The schedule will be as follows:
• Monday — East End;
• Tuesday — Elk Run and Park Avenue area;
• Wednesday — Middletown and Findley to Center Street;
• Thursday — Church Street and Indiana Street;
• Friday — West End and South Side.

Changes to this schedule could occur due to weather and/or the amount of leaves to be picked up.

Leaves should be raked to the curb next to the road, but not raked onto the roadway. Do not park on or near piles of raked leaves.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Tom Chelgren is a recognizable face around town. He may be most recognizable as a former sergeant for the Pennsylvania State Police, or perhaps, you have seen him throughout the community involved in one of his many activities.
