Lady Chucks 'came out as a new team' against DuBois

PUNXSUTAWNEY — The Punxsutawney Lady Chucks' fortune had to change sooner rather than later.

The last time the Lady Chucks appeared on their home court, the Bradford Lady Owls walked out victorious to the tune of a 3-0 sweep.

On Monday, after leading two games to zero, the Lady Rovers of Brockway fought back to take a 3-2 win on their home court.

On Thursday night, the Lady Chucks looked like a brand new team, as they defeated the Lady Beavers of DuBois 25-14, 25-12, 25-14 for the 3-0 win.

Chucks prepare for Homecoming battle with Karns City

PUNXSUTAWNEY — After improving to 3-3 last Friday against the Clarion-Limestone Lions, the Punxsy Chucks are ready to come back home for tonight's game against Karns City.

The Chucks can't afford to look ahead to next week's game againt the powerhouse that is Clarion, as Punxsy knows that Karns City isn't a team that can be overlooked.

Rossiter American Legion hosting benefit dinner for John Raniowski

A benefit dinner will be held for John Raniowski from 4 to 8 p.m. this Saturday at the Rossiter American Legion.

This summer, Raniowski suffered head trauma and then had a stroke in August, which left him paralyzed on his right side.

To help with medical expenses and other expenses related to his care, friends will be hosting the benefit.

Help comes from community support: Salvation Army’s Harvest Radio Auction this Saturday

Captain Keith Jache, co-commander of the Salvation Army in Punxsy, is pictured with the corps’ canteen truck, which is used to respond to emergencies throughout the county.

The canteen truck is one of the ministries that is supported through the annual Harvest Radio Auction, which can be heard from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on 104.1 WPXZ.

Jache said the phone numbers to call for the auction on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m., are 814-938-5530, 814-246-9880 and 814-938-9938.

A list of the auction items is also available on Page 9 of Thursday's edition of The Spirit.

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Lynn Porada is a recognizable face around town.

You may have seen her working at Dr. Frank Bizousky’s office, or perhaps you have seen her rescuing stray animals throughout town.

An avid animal lover and animal advocate, Porada was born and raised in Punxsutawney.

Public Safety Committee warns of scam artists in area

PUNXSUTAWNEY — Punxsutawney Borough Council’s Public Safety Committee is warning residents to beware of possible scam artists who may be working their way through the area.

Mike Porada, Public Safety Committee chair, said he has received complaints from borough residents about alleged salespeople going around town and asking people if they could come into their house and demonstrate their products.
